''Guepiniopsis alpina'', commonly known as the jelly cup, alpine jelly cone, or poor man's gumdrop, is a species of fungus in the family Dacrymycetaceae. The small, gelatinous Fruit bodies are orange and cone or cup shaped. Found in western North America and Iran, the fungus grows on decaying conifer wood. Taxonomy The fungus was first described in 1901 by Samuel Mills Tracy and Franklin Sumner Earle under the name ''Guepinia alpina'' in 1901. It was later transferred to ''Heterotextus'' in 1932, and then to '' Guepiniopsis'' in 1938. It is commonly known as the "jelly cup", "alpine jelly cone", or "poor man's gumdrop". Description The fruit bodies are cone-shaped, measuring up to in diameter, and hang from a narrow attachment to the substrate. MycoBank
MycoBank is an online database, documenting new mycological names and combinations, eventually combined with descriptions and illustrations. It is run by the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute in Utrecht. Each novelty, after being screened by nomenclatural experts and found in accordance with the ICN ( International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants), is allocated a unique MycoBank number before the new name has been validly published. This number then can be cited by the naming author in the publication where the new name is being introduced. Only then, this unique number becomes public in the database. By doing so, this system can help solve the problem of knowing which names have been validly published and in which year. A snowbank fungus is any one of a number of diverse species of fungus, fungi that occur adjacent to or within melting snow. They are most commonly found in the mountains of western North America where a deep snowpack accumulates during the winter and slowly melts through the spring and summer, often shaded by coniferous forest. ''Dacrymyces'' is a genus of fungi in the family Dacrymycetaceae. Species are saprotrophs and occur on dead wood. Their distribution is worldwide. Basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are ceraceous to gelatinous, often yellow to orange, and typically disc-shaped to cushion-shaped. ''Bisporella citrina'', commonly known as yellow fairy cups or lemon discos, is a species of fungus in the family Helotiaceae. The fungus produces tiny yellow cups up to in diameter, often without stalks, that fruit in groups or dense clusters on decaying deciduous wood that has lost its bark.
