Groves, Texas
Groves is a city in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 17,335 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Beaumont– Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1886, Sam Courville moved his family from a Sabine Lake settlement in Port Arthur to a new home on of land. It was in that same general area around 1911 that John Warne Gates purchased additional tracts of land. The land was conveyed to the Griffing brothers of Port Arthur in 1916, and three years later Griffing Brothers Nursery employee Wiley Choate supervised the planting of several thousand pecan trees on a tract. In 1921, the Port Arthur Land Development Company took control of the site and divided the land into a residential subdivision known as "Pecan Grove". The name was later changed to "Groves", after development representative and pioneer Port Arthurian Asa Groves. A post office was established in 1927 and a school opened in 1929. State Highway 347 (SH 347) is a Texas state highway that runs northwest from Port Arthur to the southern edge of Beaumont. The highway is signed south–north. It was designated on November 25, 1942 along the old route of US 69. Route description SH 347 begins at SH 87 in Port Arthur. The highway heads northwest, crossing SH 73, Spur 136 and FM 365. SH 347 then enters Nederland and has a junction with FM 366. Texas State Highway 87
State Highway 87 (SH 87) runs for between Galveston, Texas (at a terminus shared with Interstate 45 and Spur 342) to U.S. Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 84 in Timpson, Texas. Highway 87 has a notable stretch between Sea Rim State Park and High Island, Texas that has been washed out repeatedly over the decades and has been closed continuously since 1990. State Highway 73 (SH 73) is a Texas state highway that runs from Winnie through Port Arthur to near Orange. In September 2008, Hurricane Ike forced the closure of SH 73. Among other road debris left by the storm were two 200-ton barges. The storm surge pushed the barges inland before they came to rest on the highway. History Previous routes The original SH 73 was designated on August 21, 1923, from Oldenburg to Houston, absorbing the eastern half of SH 3A. On October 26, 1932, it was rerouted southwest from Katy to Alleyton, with the portion from Oldenburg to Industry being another section ( FM 109 would connect the two sections later). Port Neches is a city in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 13,692 at the 2020 census, up from 13,040 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area. History The area known as Port Neches was once inhabited by tribes of the coastal-dwelling Karankawa and Atakapa Native Americans. Nederland ( ) is a city in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,856 at the 2020 census. The city was settled in 1897 along what is now Boston Avenue and incorporated in 1940.
