Grosse Isle, Manitoba
Grosse Isle is a small rural community north-west of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is partially in the Rural Municipality of Rosser and partially in the Rural Municipality of Rockwood. The name of Grosse Isle comes from the French "Grosse Île", meaning ''big island''. History The name comes from early French hunters, who gave the area its name as it was a large tract of wooded land, surrounded by a swamp. The name was reinforced during the 1852 flood, when people fleeing from the floodwaters sought refuge here, on "the island". A Canadian National railway point was established here in 1904. Attractions Grosse Isle is the seasonal destination of the Prairie Dog Central Railway. It is an attraction that brings people into the community from the area and from Winnipeg. Rosser is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba, lying adjacent to the northwest side of Winnipeg and part of the Winnipeg Metro Region. Its population as of the 2016 Census was 1,372. It is situated along Provincial Trunk Highway 6, and Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway. CentrePort Canada lies primarily in the eastern part of the RM, inside the Perimeter Highway. A small portion of Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport also lies within the RM of Rosser. Water services are provided by the Cartier Regional Water Cooperative. James Bezan (born May 19, 1965) is a Conservative Canadian politician who has represented the riding of Selkirk—Interlake—Eastman (formerly Selkirk—Interlake) in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. He is currently the Conservative Shadow Minister for National Defence. Lakeside is a provincial electoral division in Manitoba, Canada. It is located to the immediate northwest of the city of Winnipeg. Traditionally a rural riding, Lakeside has become more urban in recent years (as a result of both electoral redistribution and changes in demography). All the same, agriculture accounted for 17 per cent of the riding's industry in 1999. The riding is bordered to the north by Interlake, to the west by Portage la Prairie, to the south by Morris and to the east by Gimli. It also borders the city of Winnipeg to the southeast. Ralph Eichler (born March 23, 1950) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He is a member of Manitoba legislature for the riding of Lakeside (Manitoba riding), Lakeside. Before entering politics, Eichler served for eight years as the administrator of the Interlake School Division. He also owned and operated ''Prairie Farm Ranch Supply'', an exporter of livestock handling equipment. In the latter capacity, he oversaw the invention of a device known as "The Stockdoctor", now used internationally. Prairie Dog Central Railway
The Prairie Dog Central Railway is a heritage railway just outside Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Regular trips are every Saturday, Sunday and Holiday Monday from May through September, and last almost four hours with one stop in the rural community of Grosse Isle. Special dinner excursions occur during the season, as well as the Howlin' Halloween Express Trains in October. Details of the operations can be found by reviewing the schedules.
