Grobbendonk () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp ( nl, Antwerpen). The municipality comprises the towns of Bouwel and Grobbendonk proper. In 2021, Grobbendonk had a total population of 11,249. The total area is 28.36 km². The official flag of Grobbendonk was adopted in 1989. In terms of heraldry, the flag is quartered, I and IV argent, three hills vert, a bird sable (specifically a raven), II and III gules three fleur-de-lis argent. The heerlijkheid was in 1545 property of Erasmus II Schetz, the first Baron was his grandson Antonie II Schetz, Baron of Grobbendonck. Lord Of Grobbendonk
Lord of Grobbendonk is a feudal Flemish title originating from Grobbendonk. This title belongs today to the Belgian nobility. History The origin of this important hereditary title goes back to the 13th century. The lordship was in possession of different Flemish noble houses at different times: van Wilre, van Crayenhem, Brant, van Jauche, van Mastaing, and finally Schetz. The lordship was created a county in 1637 by royal decree of King Philip IV of Spain. Currently it is held by the descendants of the house of Schetz: the current duke of Ursel is still Count of Grobbendonk. Anthonie II Schetz
Anthonie Schetz (1564, Antwerp - 1640 or 1641, Brussels), was a military commander in Spanish service during the Eighty Years' War. He was baron (and from 1637 count) of Grobbendonk, lord of Tilburg and Goirle, Pulle and Pulderbos, and Wezemaal. He was the military governor of 's-Hertogenbosch until the town was lost to the Dutch in 1629, captain of a cavalry regiment, and a knight of the order of Santiago. Life Early life The youngest son of Gaspard II Schetz and Catharina d'Ursel, of the noble Ursel family, and the younger brother of Conrad III Schetz, Anthonie was baptised in Antwerp in August 1564. His parents had 21 children in total, eight of whom survived to adulthood. Bouwel
Bouwel is a ''deelgemeente'' in the Belgian province of Antwerp; it is attached to the municipality of Grobbendonk. The village was first mentioned in 994 or 997 as Odlobolo. Bouwel used to be owned by the Lords of Grobbendonk until 1487, when it became an independent ''heerlijkheid''. The domain of the Bouwelhof Castle covered the northern eastern part of Bouwel. Henri "Rik" Van Looy (born 20 December 1933 in Grobbendonk) is a Belgian former professional cyclist of the post- war period, nicknamed the ''King of the Classics'' or ''Emperor of Herentals'' (after the small Belgian city where he lived). He was twice world professional road race champion, and was the first cyclist to win all five 'Monuments': the most prestigious one-day classics – a feat since achieved by just two others (both also Belgians: Roger De Vlaeminck and Eddy Merckx). With 379 road victories he's second to Merckx only. He is ninth on the all-time list of Grand Tour stage winners with thirty-seven victories. Career Van Looy rose to prominence when he won the Belgian amateur road championship in 1952. Erasmus II Schetz
Erasmus II Schetz sometimes Scets died 1550 was a Flemish nobleman. Lord of Grobbendonk He was born as son of Conrad I Schetz who married in 1485 to Maria Crans di Roscara, daughter of Mathieu Roscara. He lived in Maastricht, and came to Antwerp for financial reasons. He acquired the Heerlijkheid of Grobbendonk on the 3 Juny 1545, he paid it from Philippe, Lord of Jauche. His descendants are known as Schetz de Grobbendonk, when it became a barony in 1602. He married Ida of Rechtergem, daughter of a wealthy calamine trader in Aachen. They had 4 sons, three of them named after the Three wise men. His fortune was immense, he had a residence called ''Huis van Aken'', heritage (1534) of his father in law. He had the house extended into a small palace where Emperor Charles V visited in 1545. After the death of Erasmus, the house was sold in 1575. Herman Van Springel
Herman Vanspringel (14 August 1943 – 25 August 2022), also spelled Herman Van Springel, was a Belgian road racing cyclist, from Grobbendonk, in the Flemish Campine or Kempen region. He achieved podium finishes in all three of the grand tours with second place in the 1968 Tour de France and 1971 Giro d'Italia, and third place in the 1970 Vuelta a España. He wore the Maillot Jaune during four stages of the 1968 Tour de France and for three stages in 1973. Career Vanspringel was an accomplished time-trial rider, almost winning the Tour de France in 1968. He was beaten in the last stage by Dutch rider Jan Janssen in a time-trial. Charles Joseph Marie, 6th Duke d'Ursel (Brussels, July 3, 1848 – Strombeek-Bever, November 15, 1903), was a Belgian politician. Family Joseph, Count d'Ursel was the second son of Léon, 5th Duke d'Ursel (1805–1878) and his second wife, Henriette d'Harcourt. Nijlen () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises the towns of , Kessel and Nijlen proper. In 2021, Nijlen had a total population of 22,985. The total area is 39.09 km2. History In 1770, a hoard of golden coins dating from Julius Caesar to Titus Flavius Domitianus was discovered. Nijlen was first mentioned in 1146 as having possessions of Tongerlo Abbey. The village was damaged during the Reformation and nearly depopulated. In the 18th century, there was a population increase which accelerated after the railway station on the line from Antwerp to Herentals opened in 1853.
