Grinnell–Newburg Community School District
The Grinnell–Newburg Community School District is a rural public school district in Iowa that serves the cities of Grinnell and Oakland Acres, the unincorporated community of Newburg, as well as surrounding rural areas in western Poweshiek and far eastern Jasper counties. Janet Stutz was hired as superintendent in 2016. Schools The district has a total of five school buildings, all of which are located in Grinnell. *Bailey Park Elementary, serving grades K–2 *Fairview Elementary, serving pre-K and K–2 *Davis Elementary, which serves 3rd and 4th grade students *Grinnell Community Middle School (5–8) *Grinnell Community High School (9–12) The district formerly operated a school in Newburg. The ''Herald'' was founded on August 16, 1871 as a semi-weekly newspaper, and the ''Register'' was founded in 1888. The ''Grinnell Herald'', in turn, was founded as the ''Poweshiek County Herald'' on March 18, 1868. In 1944, the newspaper was purchased by the Pinder family. It remains a family owned paper as of 2022. The paper was published by Al and Dorothy Pinder until their deaths. Their daughters, Martha Pinder and Peggy Elliot manage and edit the paper as of 2022. Grinnell is a city in Poweshiek County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,564 at the time of the 2020 census. It is best known for being the home of Grinnell College. History Grinnell was founded by settlers from New England who were descended from English Puritans of the 1600s. Grinnell was founded in 1854 by four men: Josiah B. Grinnell, a Congregationalist from Vermont; Homer Hamlin, a minister; Henry Hamilton, a surveyor; and Dr. Thomas Holyoke. The city was to be named "Stella," but J. B. Grinnell convinced the others to adopt his name, describing it as rare and concise. Grinnell was incorporated on April 28, 1865, and by 1880 Grinnell had a population of around 2000. Newburg is an unincorporated community in Jasper County, in the U.S. state of Iowa. Geography Newburg lies near the junction of county highway T38 and F17 (Newburg Road).
