Gregory Tony
} Gregory Scott Tony (born 1978) is an American law enforcement officer and the 17th Sheriff of Broward County, Florida. Tony was initially appointed sheriff in 2019 by Florida governor Ron DeSantis, to fill a vacancy. In November 2020, Tony won election to the office of sheriff, which he had previously held by appointment. Early life and education Tony was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the youngest of five children of Gloria Tony and William Scott. He attended Olney High School in Philadelphia, graduating in 1997. Tony moved to Tallahassee, Florida, and attended Tallahassee Community College. He then attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, where he played football under Bobby Bowden. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in criminology in 2002. There is evidence, however, that community spread of COVID-19 began in Florida much earlier, perhaps as early as the first week of January, with as many as 171 people in Florida who had shown symptoms now identified with COVID-19, prior to receiving confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting
On January 6, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida, United States, near the baggage claim in Terminal 2. Five people were killed while six others were injured in the shooting. About 36 people sustained injuries in the ensuing panic. Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, who flew in to the airport from Alaska and committed the shooting with a Walther PPS 9mm semi-automatic pistol, was taken into custody by a Broward County Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputy within 85 seconds after he started shooting. The shooting from start to finish lasted 7080 seconds. Santiago was later diagnosed with schizophrenia and pleaded guilty to avoid possible execution. Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting
On February 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire on students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Miami suburban town of Parkland, Florida, murdering 17 people and injuring 17 others. Cruz, a former student at the school, fled the scene on foot by blending in with other students, and was arrested without incident approximately one hour later in nearby Coral Springs. Al Lamberti (born April 14, 1954) is a former sheriff of Broward County, which encompasses Fort Lauderdale in southeastern Florida. Education Lamberti received a B.A. in criminal justice from Florida Atlantic University in 1981. Career Coast Guard Lamberti served in the U.S. Coast Guard at various duty stations, primarily in Miami, Florida. He was also assigned as a special agent in the Office of Intelligence and Law Enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. Law enforcement Lamberti joined the Broward County Sheriff's Office as a detention deputy in 1977.
