Greenland Brewhouse
Greenland Brewhouse was Greenland's first brewery. It was located in Narsaq in Southern Greenland and was founded in December 2004. The beer was brewed from water derived from melted icebergs. Melt water was collected from icebergs and transported to the brewery by local fishermen on their fishing boats. Greenland Brewhouse pioneered 'ice beer', brewed from 2000-year-old natural Arctic ice harvested from glaciers. Prior to 1954, alcohol sales were heavily restricted in Greenland, thus home brewing presented problems. Bankruptcy The microbrewery filed for bankruptcy in October 2008. A month later—in November 2008—the main shareholder, Greenland Ventures, decided against further investment in the company and the brewery was declared bankrupt. The main Greenlandic newspaper ''Sermitsiaq'' reported the brewery left behind four million kroner in debt. Nuuk (; da, Nuuk, formerly ) is the capital and largest city of Greenland, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. The beer market in Denmark is dominated by the brands Carlsberg Group, Carlsberg and Tuborg. Since Tuborg was acquired by Carlsberg in 1970, Carlsberg has held a near-monopoly. A number of regional breweries, however, managed to survive, and most of them merged into Royal Unibrew in 2005. Ilulissat
Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is the municipal seat and largest town of the Avannaata municipality in western Greenland, located approximately north of the Arctic Circle. With the population of 4,670 as of 2020, it is the third-largest city in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. The city is home to almost as many sled-dogs as people. In direct translation, Ilulissat is the Kalaallisut word for "Icebergs" ( da, Isbjerge). Sermitsiaq (newspaper)
''Sermitsiaq'' is one of two national newspapers in Greenland. It is named after the mountain Sermitsiaq. The newspaper was published for the first time May 21, 1958, as a Kalaallisut-language alternative to the Danish-language newspaper ''Mikken''. The two magazines were printed separately, with Mikken on Saturdays and Sermitsiaq on Mondays for about six months, until Mikken was published for the last time on 22 November the same year. ''Sermitsiaq'' was first printed in both Danish and Kalaallisut the week before ''Mikken'' closed down. ''Sermitsiaq'' was a local newspaper distributed only in Nuuk city until around 1980 when the newspaper became national. The newspaper became increasingly political in the period around 1980, since Greenland was granted home rule in 1979.
