Greene County Community School District
Greene County Community School District (GCCSD) is a rural public school district headquartered in Jefferson, Iowa. The district is almost entirely in Greene County while small portions are in Boone County. Communities served are Jefferson, Dana, Grand Junction, Rippey and Scranton. It formed on July 1, 2014, as the consolidation of the East Greene and Jefferson–Scranton school districts. They began "grade sharing" (in which students from one district attended school in another district for certain grade levels) the previous school year. , it has about 1,100 students and 200 employees. Jefferson, Iowa
Jefferson is a city in, and the county seat of Greene County, Iowa, United States, along the Raccoon River, North Raccoon River. The population was 4,182 at the time of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. It is the home of the Mahanay Memorial Bell Tower, tall, located on the town square, and visible for miles. The tower is named for Floyd Mahanay, a businessman, philanthropist, and former resident. Jefferson is bisected east to west by the old Lincoln Highway (formerly U.S. 30). A new U.S. Route 30 in Iowa, U.S. Route 30 is located approximately one mile to the north. Jefferson–Scranton Community School District or Jefferson–Scranton Community Schools (JSCS) was/is a school district headquartered in Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa, United States. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) is the governing body for girls' junior and senior high school sports in the U.S. state of Iowa. The association promotes and regulates interscholastic sports among its member schools. Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,771. The county seat is Jefferson. The county is named in honor of General Nathanael Greene. History Greene County was formed on January 15, 1851, and from 1854, self-governed. It was named after General Nathanael Greene, a hero in the Revolutionary War. The first settler was Truman Davis. He settled on the Raccoon River. The first courthouse was built in 1856 from wood. Previously court was held in a log cabin southeast of Jefferson.
