Greenbank, Washington
Greenbank is an unincorporated community on Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington, United States. Greenbank, which was named by Calvin Philips after his homestead in Delaware, has a population around 1626. It is the location of the Greenbank Farm, once the largest loganberry farm in the world, and the Greenbank Store, which was once owned and run by the Coupe family, descendants of Captain Thomas Coupe, founder of Coupeville and is now owned and run by new owners unrelated to the Coupe family. Opening in 1904, Greenbank Store features a deli, access to the post office, a small grocery store, as well as a full-service restaurant upstairs (opening again soon). Greenbank Farm, once the largest loganberry farm in the country, now has fields of trails and an off leash dog area. The farm was saved from development when the Port of Coupeville agreed to purchase the 151 acre property and take on a 20 year bond payment in 1997. South Whidbey State Park
South Whidbey State Park is a public recreation area consisting of of old-growth forest and tidelands with of shoreline on Admiralty Inlet along the west shore of Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington. The state park contains many mature specimens of western red cedar, Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock, some of the largest on Whidbey island, including a giant cedar over 500 years old. History When the park was created in 1974 it consisted of approximately 87 acres of shoreline along Puget Sound. In 1977 local citizens filed a lawsuit against the Washington Department of Natural Resources, which managed the park, when they learned that the state agency planned to grant logging contracts on an adjacent 267 acre parcel of land known as "Classic U," which contained one of the few remaining stands of old-growth conifers on the island. Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens
Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens (53 acres) are nonprofit gardens located at 3531 Meerkerk Lane, Greenbank, Washington. They are open daily; admission is $5.00 The gardens were founded by Ann and Max Meerkerk in the early 1960s on , and served as a site where they collected and hybridized rhododendrons. They gradually expanded the garden to of rhododendrons surrounded by an additional of woodlands. Ann Meerkerk left the gardens to the Seattle Rhododendron Society in 1979. Today the garden features more than 1,500 varieties of rhododendron species and hybrids. Washington State Route 525
State Route 525 (SR 525) is a state highway located in Snohomish and Island counties in the western region of the U.S. state of Washington. SR 525 begins at an interchange with Interstate 5 (I-5) and I-405 in Lynnwood and travels north to SR 99 as a four-lane controlled-access freeway. From Lynnwood, the highway serves Mukilteo and becomes the terminus of SR 526 before taking its ferry route to Clinton on Whidbey Island. SR 525 traverses the island's interior as part of the Whidbey Island Scenic Byway before the designation ends at an intersection with SR 20 south of Coupeville. The National Audubon Society (Audubon; ) is an American non-profit environmental organization dedicated to conservation of birds and their habitats. Coupeville, Washington
Coupeville is a town on Whidbey Island, in Island County, Washington, United States. It is the county seat of Island County. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. History Prior to European colonization, Coupeville and the bay in which it is located, Penn Cove, was inhabited by the Lower Skagit, a Lushootseed-speaking Coast Salish people. There were three villages around the bay, with the largest being ''bəc̓adᶻali'', meaning "snake place", located at the site of present day Coupeville. There was an abundance of salmon, clams, and other resources, as well as offering easy access to the water, making it an excellent village site. When Europeans arrived to explore the Puget Sound, it was Joseph Whidbey who first visited the bay, naming it Penn Cove in honor of his good friend. Loganberry
The loganberry (''Rubus'' × ''loganobaccus'') is a hybrid of the North American blackberry (''Rubus ursinus'') and the European raspberry (''Rubus idaeus''). The plant and the fruit resemble the blackberry more than the raspberry, but the fruit color is a dark red, rather than black as in blackberries. Loganberries – which were an accident of berry breeding by James Harvey Logan, for whom they are named – are cultivated commercially and by gardeners.
