The Green Party of Armenia ( hy, Հայաստանի Կանաչների կուսակցություն, translit=Hayastani Kanach’neri kusakts’ut’yun), also known as the Social-Ecological Party is a Green political party in Armenia. History The party was established in February 1999 by Armenak Dovaltyan, a former member of the Armenian National Congress party. The party currently does not have any political representation in the National Assembly and acts as an extra-parliamentary force. Ideology The party is Armenia's main green political force and actively campaigns for greater environmental protection throughout the country. However, party leader Dovaltyan, confirmed that environmentalism is not the only issue important to the party. The party encourages economic development, reducing levels of outward emigration, and supports greater unity between Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora. EVN Report
EVN Report is a non-profit online news site covering Armenian news for an English-speaking audience. It is based in Yerevan, from which it gets its namesake (EVN is the IATA airport code for Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport). History The site began publishing in 2017 but launched to prominence during the 2018 Velvet Revolution in Armenia, as a major source of English-language reporting. After its start at the Yerevan Impact Hub incubator center, it moved into its own office space in 2019. Besides covering current news, ''EVN Report'' also places emphasis on policy areas that it considers neglected by other outlets. 2021 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 20 June 2021. The elections had initially been scheduled for 9 December 2023, but were called earlier due to a political crisis following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and an alleged attempted coup in February 2021. Nikol Pashinyan, who had served as Prime Minister since 2018, resigned in April 2021 and subsequently the seventh National Assembly was dissolved on 10 May. Pashinyan continued to serve as acting prime minister until the elections were held. Following the election, Pashinyan's Civil Contract party received 54% of the vote and won 71 seats, a majority in the 107-seat parliament. 2018 Armenian Revolution
The 2018 Armenian Revolution, most commonly known in Armenia as #MerzhirSerzhin ( hy, ՄերժիրՍերժին, meaning "#RejectSerzh"), was a series of anti-government protests in Armenia from April to May 2018 staged by various political and civil groups led by a member of the Armenian parliament — Nikol Pashinyan (head of the Civil Contract party). Protests and marches took place initially in response to Serzh Sargsyan's third consecutive term as the most powerful figure in the government of Armenia and later against the Republican Party-controlled government in general. Pashinyan declared it a Velvet Revolution ( hy, Թավշյա հեղափոխություն). On April 22, Pashinyan was arrested and held in solitary confinement overnight, then released on April 23, the same day that Sargsyan resigned, saying "I was wrong, while Nikol Pashinyan was right". Nikol Pashinyan
Nikol Vovayi Pashinyan ( hy, Նիկոլ Վովայի Փաշինյան, ; born 1 June 1975) is an Armenian politician serving as the prime minister of Armenia since 8 May 2018. A journalist by profession, Pashinyan founded his own newspaper in 1998, which was shut down a year later for libel. He was sentenced for one year for defamation against then Minister of National Security Serzh Sargsyan. He edited the newspaper '' Haykakan Zhamanak'' ("Armenian Times") from 1999 to 2012. A supporter of Armenia's first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, he was highly critical of second president Robert Kocharyan, Defense Minister Serzh Sargsyan, and their allies, frequently referring to them as the "Karabakh Clan". Pashinyan was also critical of Armenia's close relations with Russia, and promoted establishing closer relations with Turkey instead. 2018 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 9 December 2018, as none of the parties in the National Assembly were able to put forward and then elect a candidate for Prime Minister in the two-week period following the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 16 October. They were the first elections after the 2018 revolution and the country's first-ever snap elections. The result was a landslide victory for Pashinyan's My Step Alliance, which received 70% of the vote and won 88 of the 132 seats in the National Assembly. Yerevan City Council
The Yerevan City Council () is the lawmaking body of the city of Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia. It has 65 members elected by Party-list proportional representation system, headed by the Mayor of Yerevan. The Council serves as a check against the mayor in a mayor-council government model. The council monitors performance of city agencies and makes land use decisions, as well as, legislating on a variety of other issues. The Alliance of Ideological Liberals, also known as the GALA Party ( hy, Գաղափարախոսական լիբերալների դաշինք) is an Armenian political party. History The Alliance of Ideological Liberals was founded on 1 July 2016 in Gyumri. The party was founded and currently led by businessman Vahan Khachatryan. Yerevan City Council elections were held on 23 September 2018. The snap election was trigged after the resignation of former mayor Taron Margaryan amid the aftermath of the 2018 Armenian Velvet Revolution.
