Greece National Baseball Team
The Greece national baseball team represents Greece in international baseball play. The team are a member of the World Baseball Softball Confederation and WBSC Europe. 2004 Olympics The first time that Greece put together a national team that got any recognition in the baseball world was during the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Greece, as the host country, was faced with the dilemma that the actual baseball talent pool in the country was very small, and what players were available were amateur. However, as a result of lenient citizenship laws, various minor leaguers from the United States were able to play for the Greeks. Among the better known players were Baltimore Orioles prospect Nick Markakis, former Major Leaguer Clay Bellinger and various other players of Greek descent. Confederation Of European Baseball
The World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe, known as WBSC Europe, was established on February 10th, 2018 during a Congress of the Confederation of European Baseball and the European Softball Federation in Val d’Europe, France. the establishment of WBSC Europe followed the historic merger of the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) and the European Softball Federation (ESF). As of September 2022, WBSC Europe counts 40 members for baseball and 39 for softball. The CEB was founded in 1953 with 5 members, which were Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy and Spain. The CEB was responsible for operating the European Baseball Championship, a championship that has been running since 1954 in Europe. In 2010, there were 112,303 players in the CEB countries. Costa Christo Kapothanasis
Costa Christo Kapothanasis is an American-born baseball player. He is a pitcher for the Panathinaikos Baseball Club which is a member team of the Greek Baseball League. He was 3-1 with a 6.29 ERA as a Division I freshman then improved to 2-2, 6.17 in his second campaign, and 4-3, 5.06 as a junior. He fell to 2-7, 6.68 his senior year. Kapothanasis then joined the Greek National Baseball team for the 2010 European Baseball Championshipgoing 1-3 with a win over Sweden. He beat Sweden in his debut but lost to Croatia, Germany (on a bases-loaded walk to Ludwig Glaser and the Netherlands. Kapothanasis also played for Greece in the 2012 European Baseball Championship, doing much better. He held the Greek lead with four appearances and tossed 7 1/3 shutout innings, getting the save in the 7th/8th place game over France.
