FM Broadcasting
FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. FM broadcasting is capable of higher fidelity—that is, more accurate reproduction of the original program sound—than other broadcasting technologies, such as AM broadcasting. Plymouth
Plymouth () is a port city and unitary authority in South West England. It is located on the south coast of Devon, approximately south-west of Exeter and south-west of London. Guildford () is a town in west Surrey, around southwest of central London. As of the 2011 census, the town has a population of about 77,000 and is the seat of the wider Borough of Guildford, which had around inhabitants in . The UKRD Group Ltd was a British media company that owned 15 commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. The name originates from UK Radio Developments. Since its acquisition in March 2019, it has been run as a subsidiary of Bauer Radio. History Formed on 22 August 1990 as a company to invest in commercial stations following the relaxation of station ownership laws, its first investment was a stake in Cornwall's Pirate FM 102, which was designed and launched by former County Sound boss Mike Powell who, after leaving County Sound, had formed Infinity Radio. Greatest Hits Radio Plymouth is a local radio station serving Plymouth, Devon in England. Previously called Radio Plymouth, the station was folded into Greatest Hits Radio South West, as part of a rebrand, on 1 November 2020. History Radio Plymouth was launched at 10am on Sunday 28 February 2010 by television presenter Phillip Schofield, an investor in the station. The first song played was ''The Way It Is'' by Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Tim Manns, formerly with Orchard FM Radio Plymouth's station manager and Drivetime presenter, welcomed listeners to a two-hour show which featured presenters. Sam FM (Swindon)
Sam FM Swindon was a commercial radio station based in Swindon, England, broadcasting on the 107.7 FM frequency. The station was formed by The Local Radio Company, who wanted to create a local radio rival to GWR FM (now Heart). It started in 2006 as Brunel FM. It would eventually be owned by One Gold Radio Ltd who would rename it to Total Star Swindon, and then More Radio a few years later. Celador would purchase More Radio in 2012 and convert it into Jack FM Swindon. It would then later be re-branded to SamFM Swindon. Due to financial issues and budget cuts at Celador, SamFM Swindon was merged into the Bristol sister station of the same name. Greatest Hits Radio Somerset (Yeovil) is a local radio station serving Yeovil, South Somerset and West Dorset in England. The station, formerly known as The Breeze (Yeovil and South Somerset), was folded into Greatest Hits Radio South West, as part of a rebrand, on 1 September 2020. History The station was originally called Ivel FM. In 2002, the radio station along with YDR FM, Mirage FM and Merlin FM bid for the licence to serve Yeovil. Ivel FM was victorious and commenced broadcasting in October 2003. In its final 13th year of statutory life (2003), the Radio Authority awarded its 150th analogue radio licence - on this occasion for the South Somerset area of Yeovil. The Breeze (North Somerset) was a local radio station serving North Somerset, England. The station was folded into Greatest Hits Radio South West, as part of a rebrand, on 1 September 2020. History The Breeze started life as 107.7 WFM with presenters Steve Carpenter, Anthony Ballard, Andy Saunders and launched on 23 October 1999. It was later rebranded by the then new owners UKRD as a way of recognition of its existing Star brand. The station was then known as Star 107.7 before changing to Star Radio in North Somerset. In November 2009, Star Radio (North Somerset) was sold by UKRD and renamed Nova Radio on 26 September 2010. The Breeze (South Devon) was a local radio station serving South Devon, England. The station was folded into Greatest Hits Radio South West, as part of a rebrand, on 1 September 2020. The Breeze South Devon The Breeze South Devon was the independent radio station for Torbay and South Devon, which formed a part of The Breeze network. Before this, the station was originally called Palm 105.5 until September 2015, following its acquisition the year previous. The Breeze (Frome & West Wiltshire) was a local radio station serving Warminster, Westbury / Trowbridge in West Wiltshire / Frome in East Somerset. The station was folded into Greatest Hits Radio South West, as part of a rebrand, on 1 September 2020. History The Breeze was proposed to be called Pride FM, until it was launched on 5 November 2001 and named as 3TR FM. During the launch, the station was owned by The Local Radio Company (TLRC). Jonathan Fido was the first presenter to go on air at 8:30am. The last song played during the test transmissions was 'Sweet Surrender' by Wet Wet Wet.
