Greater Temuco is a Chilean conurbation composed of the cities of Temuco and Padre Las Casas in AraucanÃa Region of southern Chile. It has a population of 260,878, according to the 2002 census. Greater Temuco was formed when Temuco was divided into two administrative units, making the urban area spread into more than the Temuco commune. The population comprises Mapuche people as well as European immigrants, mainly Spaniards and Germans. Conurbation
A conurbation is a region comprising a number of metropolises, cities, large towns, and other urban areas which through population growth and physical expansion, have merged to form one continuous urban or industrially developed area. In most cases, a conurbation is a polycentric urbanised area in which transportation has developed to link areas. They create a single urban labour market or travel to work area. Patrick Geddes coined the term in his book ''Cities In Evolution'' (1915). Temuco
Temuco () is a city and commune, capital of the CautÃn Province and of the AraucanÃa Region in southern Chile. The city is located south of Santiago. The city grew out from a fort of the same name established in 1881 during Chile's invasion of AraucanÃa. Temuco lies in the middle of the historic AraucanÃa, a traditional land of the indigenous Mapuche. Temuco's central place in AraucanÃa with easy access to the Andean valleys, lakes and coastal areas makes it a hub for tourism, agricultural, livestock and forestry operations as well as a communication and trade centre for the numerous small towns of AraucanÃa. Temuco has recently been regarded as a university city as it houses two large universities: University of the Frontier and Temuco Catholic University. AraucanÃa Region
The AraucanÃa ( ), La AraucanÃa Region ( es, Región de La AraucanÃa ) is one of Chile's 16 first-order administrative divisions, and comprises two provinces: Malleco in the north and CautÃn in the south. Its capital and largest city is Temuco; other important cities include Angol and Villarrica. Chile did not incorporate the lands of the AraucanÃa Region until the 1880s, when it occupied the area to end resistance by the indigenous Mapuche by both military and political means. The Mapuche ( (Mapuche & Spanish: )) are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, including parts of Patagonia. The collective term refers to a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups who shared a common social, religious, and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage as Mapudungun speakers. Their habitat once extended from Aconcagua Valley to Chiloé Archipelago and later spread eastward to Puelmapu, a land comprising part of the Argentine pampa and Patagonia.
