Grassella Oliphant
Grassella Oliphant (September 1, 1929, in Pittsburgh – December 16, 2017) was an American jazz drummer. Oliphant backed Ahmad Jamal in 1952 and Sarah Vaughan in the late 1950s, then worked with Gloria Lynne and Shirley Scott. He released two soul jazz albums as a leader on Atlantic Records in the 1960s. On ''The Grass Roots'', released in 1965, he worked with the saxophonist Harold Ousley, the vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and the bassist Ray McKinney. His 1968 release, ''The Grass Is Greener'', had John Patton on organ, Grant Green on guitar, Clark Terry on trumpet and Major Holley on bass, in addition to Ousley. ''The Grass Is Greener'' has been sampled by hip hop artists. Both albums were reissued on CD by Collectables Records as a single disc in 2005. The NAMM Oral History Program is a collection of one-on-one interviews with people involved in the music products industry, including music instrument retailers, instrument and product creators, suppliers and sales representatives, music educators and advocates, publishers, live sound and recording pioneers, innovators, founders, and artists. AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Initiated in 1991, the database was first made available on the Internet in 1994. AllMusic is owned by RhythmOne. Prestige Records is a jazz record company and label founded in 1949 by Bob Weinstock in New York City which issued recordings in the mainstream, bop, and cool jazz idioms. The company recorded hundreds of albums by many of the leading jazz musicians of the day, sometimes issuing them on subsidiary labels. In 1971, the company was sold to Fantasy, which was later absorbed by Concord. History The Prestige office was located at 446 West 50th Street, New York City. Its catalogue included Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Wardell Gray, Thelonious Monk, and Sonny Rollins. Herman Foster
Herman Foster (April 26, 1928 – April 3, 1999) was an American bebop jazz pianist. He was blinded during childbirth through the carelessness of a doctor. He began his musical career early playing the violin, clarinet, saxophone, and piano. He became a self-taught pianist. His family moved from Philadelphia to New York City in 1947 where he began to attend jam sessions and then played with Eric Dixon, Dick Carter and the big band of Herb Jones. Then he met Lou Donaldson and they played together from 1953 to 1966. He also worked with King Curtis, Bill English, and Seldon Powell in the 1950s, and with Al Casey and Gloria Lynne in the 1960s, in addition to playing with his own trio. He returned to work in Donaldson's quartet in the 1980s. In 1996 he married Hisayo Tominaga, a jazz vocalist.
