Granite, Maryland
Granite is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. Originally known as Waltersville, it was renamed Granite in recognition of its principal product (the Woodstock Quartz Monzonite was quarried). The village was the center of this industry, which during its peak in the late 19th century provided building materials for major projects throughout the eastern seaboard. The Granite Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. The Nike Missile Base BA-79 was located in Granite. It was active from 1954 to 1974. Woodstock Quartz Monzonite
The Woodstock Quartz Monzonite is a Silurian or Ordovician quartz monzonite pluton in Baltimore County, Maryland. It is described as a massive biotite-quartz monzonite which intrudes through the Baltimore Gneiss at a single locality surrounding the town of Granite, Maryland. The extent of this intrusion was originally mapped in 1892 as the "Woodstock granite". It was given its current name in 1964 by C. A. Hopson.Hopson, C. Granite () is a coarse-grained (phaneritic) intrusive igneous rock composed mostly of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. It forms from magma with a high content of silica and alkali metal oxides that slowly cools and solidifies underground. Griggs House
Griggs House was a historic home located in Granite, Maryland. It was a two-story house constructed in the mid-19th century. The home is associated with the film, ''The Blair Witch Project''. The house was a built in the style of Federal architecture, as a two-story stucco faced post and beam wood construction house on a stone foundation. It was two bays by three bays wide, and situated near the Smith/Sumwalt house and the Granite quarry which the town was renamed for. The house was visible on the 1877 Baltimore County Atlas. In 1984, the Department of Natural Resources conducted a historical survey of the Griggs property that resided on parkland of Patapsco Valley State Park. The property was not in use by this time and had interior details removed by vandals. In 1999, the house was used for the climactic ending of ''The Blair Witch Project''. Project Nike (Greek: Νίκη, "Victory") was a U.S. Army project, proposed in May 1945 by Bell Laboratories, to develop a line-of-sight anti-aircraft missile system. Granite Historic District
Granite Historic District is a national historic district in Granite, Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It comprises the focus of a rural quarrying community located in the Patapsco Valley of western Baltimore County, Maryland.
