The Grand Prix Stakes is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race held under set weights with penalties conditions, for horses aged three years old, over a distance of 2200 metres held at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane, Australia during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$250,000. History In 2019, the Grand Prix Stakes was moved to its new summer home in December along with a prizemoney increase from $150,000 to $250,000. This race was formerly held during the Brisbane winter racing carnival and was run twice during the 2019-2020 racing season, in May & December. Eagle Farm Racecourse
Eagle Farm Racecourse is a heritage-listed horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located at the northern end of Racecourse Road in the suburb of Ascot, from the Brisbane central business district. The turf track is wide, with a circumference of and a home straight of . History The Eagle Farm Racecourse was established in 1863 and it is now the premier racecourse in Brisbane. In 1889–1890, the architecture partnership Hunter and Corrie and architect John H. Sirmione (horse)
Sirmione, foaled on 25 August 2003 in Australia, is notable for winning the LKS Mackinnon Stakes at 60-1 during the 2007 spring carnival. He is a bay Thoroughbred gelding by the outstanding sire, Encosta De Lago from World Guide (NZ) by Defensive Play (USA) that was bred by M.F. Doyle, Murrulla Stud in New South Wales. World Guide is the dam of four named horses, but Sirmione is her only stakes-winner. Sirmione was sold as a yearling at the Magic Millions sales on the Gold Coast for $300,000 to Bart Cummings. He is trained by the ''Cups King'', Bart Cummings and raced by owners, J M & T M Xipell, R Covington & L A & S J Smith. On 3 November 2007 he recorded an upset victory in the Mackinnon Stakes, winning by 1.75 lengths from a field which included Haradasun, Zipping, Railings and Miss Finland. Balmerino (horse)
Balmerino (11 November 1972 – 30 May 1996) was a bay Thoroughbred stallion that was foaled at Cambridge in the Waikato region of New Zealand. He later became a champion racehorse with many international successes. Breeding Balmerino was by Trictrac (FR), his dam was the unraced, Dulcie, who was by Duccio (ITL). Trictrac (FR), sired seven stakes winners that won 33 stakes races. Before Balmerino was foaled Dulcie had already produced Fulmen, Fileur, Gay Philou, Micheline and Mia Bella, all good gallopers by Le Filou (FR). Named by Clarke Anthony Shields, 'Double Century was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. A son of Century (AUS) from the mare Hello Love (AUS), he was foaled in 1975 and was trained throughout his career by Ron McDonell. Double Century was part owned by Clarke Anthony Shields and Ron McDonell. Racing record Double Century raced in each of his 2YO, 3YO and 4YO seasons but remarkable every one of his wins was recorded in his 3YO year. Kingston Town (horse)
Kingston Town (31 August 1976 – March 1991) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won three Cox Plates and 11 other Group One races and was the 1980 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year. Background He was by Bletchingly, later a Leading sire in Australia, his dam, Ada Hunter (GER) was by Andrea Mantegna (FR). Ada Hunter was the dam of nine foals, but Private Thoughts (a brother to Kingston Town) was her only other stakes winner. She was later exported to the United States. Kingston Town was bred by David Hains, who sold a share in him to G. Monsborough and his wife after the horse failed to reach his reserve as a yearling. Doomben Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Ascot, 7 kilometres north of the Brisbane central business district. The Doomben course neighbours another thoroughbred venue called the Eagle Farm Racecourse and can be accessed via car, train or bus. Together with Eagle Farm, these courses are considered the two major racecourses in South East Queensland, and can be seen sharing irrigation systems and some of Brisbane Racings feature events.
