History The Hotel Grand Chancellor, Christchurch was severely damaged in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, and was believed to be in an imminent state of collapse. The hotel at 26-storeys was the tallest building in Christchurch. The hotel was searched and no survivors or bodies found. Demolition began in December 2011 and was completed by May 2012. Hotel Grand Chancellor, Christchurch
The Hotel Grand Chancellor was a major four-star hotel in the centre of Christchurch in New Zealand, one of eleven Hotel Grand Chancellor establishments across Australia and New Zealand. The hotel was located at 161 Cashel Street, close to the city's City Mall central shopping precinct. For a long time, it was the city's tallest building standing at and 26 storeys, but was overtaken in 2009 by the tall Pacific Tower. The building was built in 1986 for office use by Forbes Construction. In 1996 it was converted to a hotel by Fletchers Construction with 15 floors of hotel accommodation, and 12 floors of car parking, also housing conference facilities for businesses. The building suffered severe damage from an earthquake in 2011 and was demolished in 2012. Initial plans to rebuild the hotel were replaced by a shopping and office complex. A major earthquake occurred in Christchurch on Tuesday 22 February 2011 at 12:51 p.m. local time (23:51 UTC, 21 February). The () earthquake struck the entire of the Canterbury region in the South Island, centred south-east of the central business district. It caused widespread damage across Christchurch, killing 185 people, in New Zealand's fifth-deadliest disaster. History Originally part of a waterfront district called 'Wapping', the site where the Hotel Grand Chancellor is situated was historically a place of factory enterprise, industrial gas production, transport and shipping. The Hotel Grand Chancellor in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia formerly known as the Novotel, is a seven-storey building located in the city's central business district (CBD). Completed in August 1989, the building was constructed at a cost of $44 million, with up to 130 men working on-site. Before the official opening of the hotel, 20,000 locals visited the Chancellor on its open day. Before the late 20th century development, Launceston's hotels and structures were predominantly constructed in the nineteenth century. Robert Hosken proposed the new international hotel in the early 1980s, which he described to be "the biggest commercial development in Launceston's history."
