Grand Canary (film)
''Grand Canary'' is a 1934 American drama film directed by Irving Cummings and starring Warner Baxter, Madge Evans and Marjorie Rambeau. It is an adaptation of A. J. Cronin's 1933 novel of the same title.Goble p.99 Synopsis A British Doctor is forced to leave England after three of his patents die during experimental treatment. He boards a freighter from Liverpool and lands in the Canary Islands. He encounters the Lady Mary Fielding, wife of one of the wealthiest landowners in the area, and explains to her that the patients died ''before'' he could administer his new serum to them, and he has been falsely scapegoated by the medical profession. When a yellow fever outbreak threatens the health of many on the island, including Lady Fielding, he takes a key role in quelling the disease. Irving Cummings
Irving Caminsky (October 9, 1888 – April 18, 1959) was an American movie actor and director. Career Born in New York City, Cummings started his acting career at age 16 in ''Diplomacy''. His Broadway, performances included ''In the Long Run'' (1909) and ''Object -- Matrimony'' (1916). Acting in the Proctor Stock Company, Cummings appeared with Lillian Russell and other actresses. He entered into movies in 1909, acting with the P. A. Powers company in Mount Vernon, New York, and quickly became a popular leading man. Few of the films he made as an actor are easily available, except for Buster Keaton's first feature film, ''The Saphead'' (1920), in which Cummings plays a crooked stockbroker and Fred Niblo's film Sex (1920), one of the first films to depict a new phenomenon in 1920s America, the Flapper. George Regas
George Thomas Regas ( Greek: Γεώργιος Θωμάς Ρεγάκος; November 9, 1890 – December 13, 1940) was a Greek American actor. Biography Regis was born in the village of Goranoi near Sparta, Greece, the brother of actor Pedro Regas. He was a stage actor in Athens before coming to the United States. Carrie Daumery
Carrie Daumery (25 March 1863 – 1 July 1938) was a Belgian-born American film actress. She appeared in more than 60 films between 1908 and 1937. Personal life Daumery was the sister of violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. She was also the widow of Belgian pianist Ysaye Daumery and the mother of film director John Daumery. Daumery and her husband were traveling in Switzerland when World War I began; when they returned to Belgium, they discovered German soldiers occupying their home. Subsequently, their son fought in the war, and her husband's health failed. When the war ended, Daumery's husband was dead, and her son was recovering from poison gas and wounds. Juliette Compton (May 3, 1899 – March 19, 1989) was an American actress whose career began in the silent film era and concluded with ''That Hamilton Woman'' in 1941. Barry Norton (born Alfredo Carlos Birabén; June 16, 1905 – August 24, 1956) was an Argentine-American actor. He appeared in over 90 films, starting in silent films from 1925 until his death in 1956. He is perhaps best known for his role as Juan Harker in Universal Pictures' Spanish-language version of '' Drácula'' in 1931, the English language role of Jonathan Harker originated by David Manners. Early life Norton was born to an affluent family in Buenos Aires on June 16, 1905. His birth name was Alfredo Carlos Birabén. In 1923, he emigrated to the United States as a second cabin class passenger under the name of Carlos Manuel A. Frederick Roger Imhof (August 15, 1875 – April 15, 1958) was an American film actor, vaudeville, burlesque and circus performer, sketch writer, and songwriter. Early years Imhof was born in Rock Island, Illinois on April 15, 1875 to Nicholas Imhoff, from Switzerland, and Susan McCluen Imhoff, from Ireland. Career Imhof began his career as a clown with the Mills Orton Circus, and as an "Irish" comedian. He "toured in vaudeville and burlesque between 1895 and 1930." By 1897, he was "teamed with Charles Osborne in a comedy contortion and burlesque acrobatics act." Around this time, he dropped an "f" from his last name. Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is a viral disease of typically short duration. In most cases, symptoms include fever, chills, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pains – particularly in the back – and headaches. Symptoms typically improve within five days. In about 15% of people, within a day of improving the fever comes back, abdominal pain occurs, and liver damage begins causing yellow skin. If this occurs, the risk of bleeding and kidney problems is increased. The disease is caused by the yellow fever virus and is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.
