Grand Bois National Park
Grand Bois National Park (French: Parc National Naturel de Grand Bois, Haitian Creole: Gran Bwa Pak Nasyonal) is a national park in Haiti. It was established on September 23, 2015, by Haitian president, Michel Martelly.Le Moniteur, Journal Officiel de la Republique d’Haiti, No. 158, 21 August 2014 The park is located in southwest Haiti, northwest of Les Anglais and it includes all areas on the mountain Morne Grand Bois of 900 meter elevation and higher. Morne Grand Bois sits directly on the border between the Sud department and the Grand'Anse department. Its highest peak is 1262 meters in elevation. Morne Grand Bois is an isolated mountain with remnant original (primary) rainforest. The founders of the Haiti National Trust identified Morne Grand Bois as one of the landmarks of biodiversity in Haiti because it has a unique ecosystem of plant and animal species, which led to its establishment as a national park. Deforestation or forest clearance is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land that is then converted to non-forest use. Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests. About 31% of Earth's land surface is covered by forests at present. Erik Leonard Ekman
Erik Leonard Ekman was a Swedish botanist and explorer. Biography Erik Leonard Ekman was born into a low-income household with five children on October 14, 1883. Due to economic difficulties, the family moved to the central-Swedish town of Jönköping when he was eleven and a half. Here, while at school, his passion for botanical collecting started. He was awarded a bachelor's degree in 1907 at Lund University in southern Sweden and was offered free passage on a ship to Argentina with a Swedish shipping company. He spent three months in Misiones collecting plants, aided greatly by the local Swedish colony. While there, he was offered a position as the Regnellian amanuensis at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, which he gladly accepted. He started his service at the museum in 1908. Magnolia Ekmanii
''Magnolia ekmanii'' is a species of plant. It is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. Description M. ekmanii is a slow growing tree, with oblong simple alternate leaves and white flowers. The leaves have a shiny upper side and are superficially similar to the leaves of the Santo Domingo apricot. This inspired the Haitian Creole name of the plant: ''abriko moron'' ( "wild apricot"). The flowering period starts in June and peaks mid of July. Seeds are released from ripe fruit in the two months from mid of November to mid of January. Range The species is endemic to Southwestern Haiti. It is known from a few mountains in the Occidental Massif de la Hotte only. ''Eleutherodactylus semipalmatus'' is a species of frog in the family Eleutherodactylidae. It is endemic to Haiti and known from the Massif de la Hotte and Massif de la Selle. Its common name is foothill robber frog. Its natural habitat is streams and their vicinity in mesic hardwood forest at elevations of asl. This formerly abundant species had not been reported since 1985 and was thought to be already extinct. It was rediscovered in 2011/2013 during expeditions to the area that is now Grand Bois National Park. The frog is threatened by habitat loss caused by logging and agriculture.
