Graham Salmon
Graham Henry Salmon, MBE (September 5, 1954 – October 1999) was a blind British athlete. He set the world record for 100m by a blind man at the 1984 Summer Paralympics and won a bronze medal in the B1 400 metres. He competed at both the Summer Paralympic Games and the Winter Paralympic Games. Early life Diagnosed with a tumour in his right eye at the age of three days, Salmon had to have an operation to remove it. When an identical tumour was discovered in his left eye some weeks later, he underwent radiotherapy to have it repaired. The eye didn't stand up to the treatment, and he was left completely blind. Salmon was educated at Linden Lodge School where he gained O levels in History and English Language and Literature. He subsequently attended Worcester College. Apart from being left blind, Salmon was able to live a relatively normal life. He gained support from the RNIB and managed to get a full qualification in computer programming. Track and field is a sport that includes Competition#Sports, athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing skills. The name is derived from where the sport takes place, a running track and a grass field for the throwing and some of the jumping events. Stoke Mandeville is a village and civil parish in the Vale of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, England. It is located three miles (4.9 km) from Aylesbury and 3.4 miles (5.5 km) from the market town of Wendover. Although a separate civil parish, the village falls within the Aylesbury Urban Area. According to the Census Report the area of this parish is . Stoke Mandeville Hospital, although named after the village, is located on the parish's border with Aylesbury. Arnhem ( or ; german: Arnheim; South Guelderish: ''Èrnem'') is a city and municipality situated in the eastern part of the Netherlands about 55 km south east of Utrecht. The 1980 Summer Paralympics ( nl, Paralympische Zomerspelen 1980), branded as the Olympics for the Disabled, were the sixth Summer Paralympic Games. They were held in Arnhem, Netherlands, from 21 to 30 June 1980. Background The Soviet Union, hosts of the 1980 Summer Olympics, were invited to host these Paralympics. However, disability sport was not there, and they passed; notoriously, a statement was issued denying the existence of any disabled people in the country. Soviet Paralympic teams were first represented in the 1988 Summer and Winter Games, also the last while the Soviet Union was extant. The first Paralympics on former Soviet territory would be in 2014.
