Graf–Seles Rivalry
The Graf–Seles rivalry was a tennis rivalry between Steffi Graf and Monica Seles, who competed in 15 matches between 1989 and 1999. Seles, a left-handed player, demonstrated powerful and precise hitting from the baseline on both wings and an exceptional return of serve. Graf, in contrast, had a formidable forehand, in addition to her penetrating serve, first rate foot speed, and mostly sliced her backhand. Their rivalry was especially notable for its change over time. Graf was dominant on tour in Seles' first years, then Seles was dominant at the Grand Slams winning three of the four matches they played between the ages of 17 and 19. During the period where Seles first reached the No. 1 spot in 1991, the head-to-head saw Graf leading 3–2, with all of their matches coming in tournament finals. Stefanie Maria Graf ( , ; born 14 June 1969) is a German former professional tennis player. Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, she was ranked world No. 1 for a record 377 weeks and won 22 major singles titles, the second-most since the start of the Open Era in 1968 and the third-most of all-time. In 1988, Graf became the first tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four major singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. Furthermore, she is the only tennis player, male or female, to have won each major tournament at least four times. The 1991 Citizen Cup was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Am Rothenbaum in Hamburg in West Germany that was part of the Tier II category of the 1991 WTA Tour. It was the 14th edition of the tournament and was held from 29 April until 5 May 1991. Second-seeded Steffi Graf won the singles title, her fifth consecutive at the event. 1993 Citizen Cup
The Citizen Cup was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was the seventh edition of the Citizen Cup and was a Tier II tournament on the 1993 WTA Tour. The tournament took place from 26 April to 2 May 1993 at the Am Rothenbaum venue, in Hamburg, Germany. Seles stabbing This tournament would later attract infamy for being the location where then World No. 1 Monica Seles was stabbed during a singles quarterfinal match with then World No. 14 Magdalena Maleeva by an obsessed fan of Steffi Graf, Günter Parche. The stabbing prompted an increase in security at subsequent tennis events. Seles would not return to professional tennis until August 1995 following the incident, and never played in Germany again. 1999 French Open – Women's Singles
Steffi Graf defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 4–6, 7–5, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1999 French Open. It was her Open Era record-extending 22nd and final major singles title, and she equaled Chris Evert's record of nine French Open final appearances. Graf also became the first player in the Open Era to defeat the top-three ranked players at the same major; defeating world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport in the quarterfinals, No. 3 Seles in the semifinals and No. 1 Hingis in the final. Hingis was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam in singles. Arantxa Sánchez Vicario was the defending champion, but lost to Hingis in the semifinals. 1999 Australian Open – Women's Singles
Two-time defending champion Martina Hingis defeated Amélie Mauresmo in the final, 6–2, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1999 Australian Open. With the win, she joined Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles as the only women to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. Hingis also became the only woman to win three consecutive Australian Open titles in singles and doubles simultaneously. This tournament marked future world No. 1 Mauresmo's first major final, and the first time she progressed past the third round of a major.
