Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (book)
''Gracie Jiu-Jitsu'' is a self-defence martial arts system instructional book written by Helio Gracie. Its first edition was published in 2006 by Editora Saraiva. Summary The book describes Brazilian jiu-jitsu (''BJJ'') techniques. The back cover says: "Helio Gracie, creator of the Gracie Jiu-jitsu, had a weak health in adolescence, being forbidden to perform any physical activity, until the chance put him on the ''tatami''. His fascinants results, inside and out the ring, thrilled all a nation and made him the first hero of Brazilian sport. After dedicating all of his life to this style of fight, Helio presents his first and unique book about the art that has made him a triumphant man. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ; pt, jiu-jitsu brasileiro ) is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. BJJ focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was initially developed in 1926 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was taught jiu-jitsu by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda who himself mastered his ground fighting while interacting with Taro Miyake (Tanabe student), Sadakazu Uyenishi (Handa, Tanabe) and Yukio Tani (Tenjin Shinyo-ryu) and catch wrestlers in Europe. Gracie Jiu-jitsu Ranking System
The Gracie jiu-jitsu ranking system is a method of signifying competency and moral character of a jiu-jitsu practitioner, developed by founders Carlos and Hélio Gracie, and utilized by members of the Gracie family. Similar to the IBJJF Brazilian jiu-jitsu ranking system, the Gracie system has a number of key differences.
