The Grace family was an English cricketing family. Fourteen members of the family played first-class cricket, with brothers W. G., E. Thornbury Castle
Thornbury Castle is a Tudor castle in the place of Thornbury, in Gloucestershire, England, situated next to the parish church of St Mary, founded in the Norman era. Construction was begun in 1511 as a further residence for Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham (1478-1521), of Stafford Castle in Staffordshire. It is not a true military fortress but rather an early example of a Tudor country house, with minimal defensive attributes. As at Richmond Palace in Surrey, the main ranges of Thornbury framed courts, of which the symmetrical entrance range, with central gatehouse and octagonal corner towers, survives, together with two less regular side ranges with many irregular projecting features and towers. It is now a grade I listed building that is operated as a hotel. Walter Gilbert (cricketer)
Walter Raleigh Gilbert (16 September 1853 – 26 July 1924) was an English amateur cricketer who played first-class cricket for Middlesex and Gloucestershire between 1873 and 1886. A cousin of W. G. Grace, he played for Gloucestershire when, dominated by the Grace family, it was the leading county. Gilbert's best season was 1876, when he scored 205 not out for the county, but he was subsequently less successful. Closely connected with the United South of England Eleven, a professional touring team of which he eventually became secretary, Gilbert was financially affected by a declining interest in such teams. With insufficient income to continue as an amateur he became a professional in 1886, but played only one match before he was caught stealing from teammates in a minor match, ending his first-class career. After serving a 28-day prison sentence Gilbert moved to Canada, where he worked for the Land Titles Office in Calgary while remaining a prominent cricketer. He died aged 70 ... George Gilbert (cricketer)
George Gilbert (2 September 1829 – 16 June 1906) was an English cricketer. Life and career Gilbert was born in Cheltenham. He was the elder brother of Walter Gilbert and a cousin of E. M., W. G. and Fred Grace. He made six first-class cricket appearances in 1851 including two for Middlesex and one for the Gentlemen against the Players. He emigrated to Australia in 1852. He played in 12 first-class matches for New South Wales, all of them against Victoria, over a 19-year period from March 1856 to March 1875. He captained New South Wales to victory over Victoria in their inaugural first-class match, and for several seasons afterwards. 1900 English Cricket Season
1900 was the 11th season of County Championship cricket in England. Yorkshire finished the season unbeaten to take the championship title and were the first unbeaten champions since the official competition began in 1890. Defending champions Surrey finished seventh. Lancashire were second, and the matches between the two top teams both ended in draws; Yorkshire made 230 in the first innings of the first game, compared to Lancashire's 96, but still could not force a victory, and in the second, with a crowd of over 44,000 present over three days at Old Trafford, Yorkshire took a lead of seven runs on first innings, but as only two and a half hours of play had been possible on the second day, the game was drawn. Sussex, who finished third with 18 of 24 matches drawn, enjoyed 2,000 runs from Ranjitsinhji for the second season running, as he bettered the record for most runs in a Championship season to 2,563. London County Cricket Club
London County Cricket Club was a short-lived cricket club founded by the Crystal Palace Company. In 1898 they invited WG Grace to help them form a first-class cricket club. Grace accepted the offer and became the club's secretary, manager and captain. As a result, he severed his connection with Gloucestershire CCC during the 1899 season. The club played first-class matches between 1900 and 1904. The club's home ground was Crystal Palace Park Cricket Ground in south London. Some of the leading players of the time played matches for the club while continuing to play for their usual teams, among them CB Fry, JWHT Douglas, Albert Trott and Ranjitsinhji. Charles Grace
Dr Charles Butler Grace (26 March 1882 – 6 June 1938) was an English first-class cricketer who was the third-born son of W. G. Grace. He was named after Charles Butler, a Tasmanian cricketer with whom W. G. Grace had stayed in 1873-74 and who became a friend. He attended Clifton College, playing for the school's first eleven cricket team in 1898–99. He played four first-class matches for London County in 1900 and W. G. Grace's XI in 1906. Grace was an exponent of lob bowling, and continued this practice well after it had become uncommon in first-class matches. His matches for London County were played alongside his father and brother, W. G. Grace junior. Henry Grace (Royal Navy Officer)
Vice-Admiral Henry Edgar Grace (11 July 1876 – 19 March 1937) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Chief of the Submarine Service. Naval career The son of W. G. Grace, the famous cricketer, Grace was promoted to captain on 31 December 1914 and served in the First World War becoming commanding officer of the cruiser HMS ''Grafton'' in June 1915, of the cruiser HMS ''Yarmouth'' in August 1917, of the cruiser HMS ''Birkenhead'' in May 1918 and of the aircraft carrier HMS ''Vindictive'' in September 1918. He was mentioned in dispatches for valuable service during operations in the Gulf of Finland. He was appointed Commodore-in-Charge, Hong Kong from June 1922 to October 1924. Grace went on to be Chief of the Submarine Service in September 1927. He was promoted vice-admiral on 1 April 1930 and put on the Retired List the following day. Royal Navy Cricket Club
The Royal Navy Cricket Club is a cricket team representing the British Royal Navy and based at the United Services Recreation Ground, Portsmouth, Hampshire. The club was formed in 1863, although cricket is recorded as having been played by seamen since at least the 17th century. Between 1912 and 1929 some of the Navy's matches had first-class status, particularly those against other branches of the services, although they also played Cambridge University, MCC, and - in 1927 - the touring New Zealanders. Additionally, in both 1910 and 1911 a combined Army and Navy side played a first-class fixture against a combined Oxford and Cambridge side. The inter-services competition against the Army and RAF still continues, although it no longer has first-class status. Another competition, the Navy Cup, is competed for within the Navy itself. Norman Grace
Norman Vere Grace (31 July 1894 – 20 February 1975) was an English first-class cricketer and Royal Navy officer. A member of the famous cricketing Grace family, he was born to the Test cricketer E. M. Grace in July 1894 at Thornbury, Gloucestershire. He was educated at Wellington College, before joining the Royal Navy. He graduated from Britannia Royal Naval College in 1912, entering into service as a midshipman. Grace served in the navy during the First World War, during the latter stages of which he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Following the war he played first-class cricket for the Royal Navy against the British Army cricket team at Lord's in 1920, claiming five wickets on debut. Three years later in December 1923, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander. He made two further first-class appearances for the Royal Navy against the Army in 1923 and 1927, though he took only a further two wickets in these matches.
