Gowna GFC
Gowna are a Gaelic football club based in the village of Loch Gowna, County Cavan, Ireland. History GAA has been present in the local Gowna area since as early as 1889 and the club went under the name of Scrabby West Breffnians or 'Breffnies' as they were otherwise known. Gowna's first major football success came in 1916 in the form of a junior championship. Gowna GFC, as we know it today, was officially reformed in 1976 and has gone through some major developmental change. The 'post reform' park was officially opened in 1982 and was revamped in 2011 to stand as it is today. After reforming in 1976, Gowna claimed the Junior title in 1982 and won the Intermediate in 1985. Gowna reached the final of the Senior Championship in 1988, where they defeated Laragh United to claim the club's first senior title. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Dermot McCabe
Dermot McCabe (born 17 May 1976) is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Cavan county team. Playing career He broke into the Cavan team in 1995 when they lost an Ulster final against Tyrone. He helped Cavan reach the All-Ireland Under 21 Football Championship final in 1996, but they were defeated by Kerry. In 1997, McCabe was highly influential as Cavan claimed the Ulster Senior Football Championship, beating Derry in Clones. Widely regarded as one of Cavan's best players of modern times, McCabe claimed an All-Star Award for his efforts in 1997. He played for Ireland in the revived 1998 International Rules Series against Australia. He was one of Ireland's stars by scoring 14 points. He was again selected for Ireland when they won the 2001 International Rules Series. In 2011 McCabe was part of the Cavan minor team management when they won the Ulster Minor Football Championship. Mark McKeever (Gaelic Footballer)
Mark McKeever (born 11 February 1984) in an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays for Gowna and was a member of the Cavan county team from 2003 to 2015. Playing career McKeever was selected for the Irish under-17 International Rules Series squad in 2001, and was named Ireland's player of the series. Club McKeever won his first senior championship as a 15 year-old in 1999 as a member of the panel, and played in the winning finals of 2000 and 2002. In this time Gowna also lost finals in 2001 and 2007. It would be fourteen years before Gowna reached another county final, facing Ramor United in the 2021 final. Ramor came out on top after a replay. McKeever and Gowna returned to the final in 2022, and at the age of 38 McKeever won his fourth senior championship with defeat of Killygarry. Lacken Celtic GFC
Lacken are a Gaelic football club from County Cavan in Ireland. They are affiliated to Cavan GAA. History Lacken Celtic GFC was formed in the 1890s by men who returned from working overseas in Scotland. The club got its name in honour of the Glasgow Celtic Soccer Club and the team wore the green and white jerseys synonymous with the Celtic club. At the time, the home pitch was known as "The Green" and was located on the banks of the River Erne (beside Scarvey Bridge, Corlismore). It was first competed for in 1915, before a lapse prior to being revived in 1966. The winners qualify to represent their county in the Ulster Intermediate Club Football Championship and in turn, go on to the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship. 2022 Cavan Senior Football Championship
The 2022 Cavan Senior Football Championship was the 113th edition of Cavan GAA's premier Gaelic football tournament for senior graded clubs in County Cavan, Ireland. The tournament consists of 12 teams, with the winner going on to represent Cavan in the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship. The championship started on 12 August 2022. Ramor United were the defending champions, but were dethroned by Killygarry in the semi-final, who reached their first senior final since 1971. GAA GPA All Stars Awards
The Gaelic Athletic Association-Gaelic Players' Association All Stars Awards (often known simply as the All Stars) are awarded annually to the best player in each of the 15 playing positions in Gaelic football and hurling. Additionally, one player in each code is selected as Player of the Year. The awards were instituted in 1971. Ulster Senior Football Championship
The Ulster Senior Football Championship is an inter-county competition for Gaelic football teams in the province of Ulster. It is organised by the Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and begins in early May. The final is usually played on the third Sunday in July. All nine Ulster counties participate. It is regarded as hardest to win of the four provincial football championships.
