Gowerton ( cy, Tregŵyr) is a large village and Community (Wales), community, about 4 miles north west of Swansea city centre, Wales. Gowerton is often known as the gateway to the Gower Peninsula. Gowerton's original name was Ffosfelin. The village falls within the Gowerton (electoral ward), Gowerton electoral ward of the City and County of Swansea Council, which elects one councillor. The Community (Wales), community had a population of 5,212. and the built-up area with Waunarlwydd 8,183. In 1980, the Welsh National Eisteddfod (named after ''Dyffryn Lliw'', see below) was held at the Elba sports complex in the village. History Intermediate School The school opened on 5 October 1896 in Talbot Street as a co-educational Intermediate school under the Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889. Waunarlwydd ( en, The Lord's Meadow – ''arlwydd'' is a local variant of ''arglwydd'') is a village and community in Swansea, Wales, within the newly formed Waunarlwydd ward in 2021. Wendy Lewis Labour is the first elected councillor for the newly created ward which she comfortably won in the 2022 local elections. In 2022 Waunarlwydd became a community. Transport Buses are provided by First Cymru: these are the 15 or 16 Swansea - Waunarlwydd and Swansea - Gorseinon. The main road in and out of the village is the B4295. The nearest motorway junction is 47 Swansea West (Penllergaer) on the M4. Dunvant
Dunvant ( cy, Dyfnant) (Dyfn - deep; nant - stream or brook) is a suburban district and community (parish) in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, and falls within the Dunvant ward. It is situated in a valley some 4.5 miles west of Swansea city centre. The population as of the 2011 census was 4,383. It adjoins the area of Killay. History Dunvant started out as a small village based around the coal industry. The area between Dunvant and Gowerton was once quite heavily industrialised. with four nearby collieries Killan, Bishwell, Bryn Mawr and Dunvant. Bishwell and Bryn Mawr to the south of Gowerton were short-lived and closed in the 1870s. However, the collieries in Dunvant have a longer history. Dunvant closed again in 1914. Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr
Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr is a Welsh language medium secondary school in Gowerton, Swansea, Wales, with approximately 950 pupils as of 2016. It was established in 1984. Notable past students include footballer John Hartson, soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, Michelin Star Chef Paul Davies and UFC fighter Brett Johns. In 2001 the school, as the only Welsh-speaking secondary school in Swansea, was encountering capacity problems, having to accommodate over 1,000 pupils in buildings that were designed for a capacity of 750. Proposals were made to move the school to the site of Penlan Comprehensive School, which was shortly to close.
