Mississippi Governor's School
The Mississippi Governor's School is a publicly funded two-week (formerly three-week) residential summer program offered to rising juniors and seniors in the state of Mississippi. The school typically accepts around 60 students each year. Modeled after the Governor's School of North Carolina, MGS was founded by governor William Winter in 1981. Since its first session, the program has been held annually on the campus of The Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Arkansas Governor's School
The Arkansas Governor's School (also known as Arkansas Governor's School for the Gifted and Talented or AGS) is a publicly funded four-week (formerly six-week) residential summer program offered to rising seniors in the state of Arkansas. The school typically accepts around 400 students each year. Modeled after the Governor's School of North Carolina, AGS was founded by governor Bill Clinton in 1979. From 1979 until 2018, the program took place on the grounds of Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. On September 13, 2018, the Arkansas Board of Education voted to move the program to Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Arkansas. This decision was met with high criticism from past alumni, staff, and parents with over 2,500 signing a petition against the campus change. Georgia Governor's Honors Program
The Georgia Governor's Honors Program (commonly referred to as "GHP") is a summer educational program in the state of Georgia, in the United States. It is a four-week (formerly six-week prior to 2011, and originally eight-week) summer instructional program for intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students of Georgia. Rising juniors and seniors in Georgia's public and private high schools may be nominated for the free program by their teachers. The program's entire cost is covered by the state of Georgia. The Governor's Honors Program began in 1964 with 400 participants and was hosted at Wesleyan College. It first took place at Valdosta State University from 1980 through 2016 (sometimes cohosted at North Georgia College in Dahlonega), then was relocated to Berry College in Rome, Georgia from 2017 through 2022, and is now hosted at Georgia Southern University. Governor's School Of Texas
The Governor's School of Texas, formerly the Texas Honors Leadership Program (THLP), is a summer program for academically talented high school students from Texas, who have completed their sophomore or junior years. The program is a member of the National Conference of Governor's Schools. 100 students are selected each year and scholars, who are nominated by their senior counselors, are invited to serve as junior counselors for the following year. Held at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, the School is an intensive three-week residential program. The program's curriculum is designed to develop skills in creativity, problem-solving, leadership, negotiation and conflict resolution, higher-level thinking, research and study skills and ethical decision-making. The Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence (PGSE) are five-week, publicly funded summer program for gifted high school students. Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell cut funding for the PGSE program in the state's 2009-2010 budget.
