Gothic Series
''Gothic'' is an action role-playing game franchise created by German developer Piranha Bytes and since May 2019 owned by THQ Nordic. The latest installment in the main series, ''Gothic 3'', was published in 2006 by JoWooD Entertainment. A spin-off, '' Arcania: Gothic 4'', was developed by Spellbound Entertainment and published by JoWooD Entertainment in 2010. Piranha Bytes
Piranha Bytes GmbH is a German video game developer based in Essen. Founded in 1997, it is best known for their ''Gothic'' and '' Risen'' series of role-playing video games. The studio is a subsidiary of THQ Nordic and, as of August 2021, employs 33 people. History Alex Brüggemann, Michael "Mike" Hoge, Stefan Nyul, and Tom Putzki founded Piranha Bytes in Bochum in 1997, incorporating it as Piranha Bytes Software GmbH. In 1999, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of the German publisher Phenomedia. Piranha Bytes' first game, ''Gothic'', was released in 2001. Shortly thereafter, Brüggemann left the company to work on smaller game projects, eventually designing '' The Settlers: Rise of an Empire''. He died on 19 January 2013 after a long illness. ''Gothic 3'' is a fantasy-themed open world action role-playing game for Microsoft Windows developed by Piranha Bytes. It is the sequel to ''Gothic II''. A ''Collector's Edition'' was released containing bonus collectible material. JoWooD Entertainment, JoWooD released a standalone expansion, entitled ''Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods'', in November 2008. Gameplay The player must complete quests and slay wild animals and monsters to earn experience and improve skills. The game is reputation centric allowing the player to side with a faction. While there are six factions in the game, only three are joinable: the Rebels, the Orc mercenaries and the Hashishin. The remaining factions are the Rangers, the Nomads and the people of Nordmar. ''Forsaken Gods'' is a standalone expansion for ''Gothic 3''. It was developed by Trine Games and published by JoWooD Productions. The game was released in Europe and North America in 2008. A version containing improvements ''Enhanced Edition'' was released in 2011 developed by Mad Vulture Games. Gameplay Gameplay in ''Forsaken Gods'' is like in ''Gothic 3'', with some small differences. The fight system has changed, now being based on Endurance. The gameplay area in ''Forsaken Gods'' has been restrained from the 3 parts in ''Gothic 3'', to just one part – Myrtana. The main plot is concentrated only in this area.
