The 28th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on November 26, 2018. The nominees were announced on October 18, 2018. Independent Filmmaker Project
The Gotham Film & Media Institute (also simply the Gotham), formerly known as the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), is a membership-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to independent film. It offers programs that assist independent filmmakers in connecting with film-industry professionals and, ultimately, audiences, and presents the annual Gotham Awards. It was founded in 1979 by independent filmmakers as the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP). Under the IFP umbrella, the New York City organization has over 5,000 members. Affiliated regional organizations are based in Chicago, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Phoenix, Arizona, Phoenix, and Seattle. Since March 2019, Jeffrey Sharp has been the executive director of the organization. In January 2021, the IFP announced its rebranding as the Gotham Film & Media Institute. Bisbee '17
''Bisbee '17'' (also ''Bisbee '17: A Story Told in Six Chapters'') is a 2018 American film directed by Robert Greene. Partially documentary and partially based on a true story Western, it reflects on the events of the 1917 Bisbee Deportation, 100 years later; it is set in Bisbee, Arizona, both in 1917 and 2017. Synopsis Five years after its statehood and a few months after the United States' entry into World War I, xenophobia and anti-unionism is growing in the southernmost towns of Arizona near the Mexican border. In Bisbee, immigrant workers organized and were violently rounded up and transported to the desert in New Mexico; not as famous as the events in nearby Tombstone, the deportation didn't live in the national memory, but is quietly remembered by the townsfolk today. Roma (2018 Film)
''Roma'' is a 2018 drama film written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who also produced, shot, and co-edited it. Set in 1970 and 1971, ''Roma'' follows the life of a live-in ''Mixteco'' housekeeper of an upper middle-class family, as a semi-autobiographical take on Cuarón's upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. The film stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira in the leading roles. It is an international co-production between Mexico and the United States. The film premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on 30 August 2018, where it won the Golden Lion. Yalitza Aparicio Martínez (; born 11 December 1993) is a Mexican actress and preschool teacher. ''Skate Kitchen'' is a 2018 American teen drama film written and directed by Crystal Moselle based on her short film ''That One Day''. Rachelle Vinberg stars as Camille, a teenage girl who befriends a group of female skateboarders in New York City. It is inspired by the real group of female skaters based in New York who call themselves "Skate Kitchen", and features the group's members playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Moselle decided to create a film about the real members of the Skate Kitchen collective when she met two of them by chance on a subway train, and wrote the script based on Vinberg's own experiences. The majority of the cast were non-professional actors, who spent eight months in acting and improvisational classes prior to filming. The film was shot on location in New York City.
