Juab County ( ) is a county in western Utah, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 10,246. Its county seat and largest city is Nephi. Juab County is part of the Provo–Orem, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Salt Lake City–Provo–Orem, Utah Combined Statistical Area. History The area of future Juab County was inhabited by nomadic indigenous peoples before the Mormon settlement of Utah beginning in 1847. Soon after, Mormons and others traveling through the area had established a road to California, leading SSW from Great Salt Lake City. It passed Salt Creek, flowing westward through a slough in the Wasatch Mountains. The area around this creek was often used as a stopping or camping spot by travelers, and by 1851 Mormon settlers had begun a settlement in the area. Confederated Tribes Of The Goshute Reservation
The Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation is located in Juab County, Utah, Tooele County, Utah, and White Pine County, Nevada, United States. It is one of two federally recognized tribes of Goshute people, the other being the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians of Utah. Government The tribe's headquarters is in Ibapah, Utah, which is an English adaption form a native Goshute term, either from Ai'ba-pa (one name of the last chief of the tribe who was also known under the common chieftain name ''ta'bi'') or from Ai-bim-pa / Ai'bĭm-pa ("White Clay Water" referring to the nearby Deep Creek). Their own name is Ai'bĭm-pa / Aipimpaa Newe ("People of Deep Creek Valley"). Eightmile, Nevada
Eightmile is a locale on the Goshute Indian Reservation in White Pine County, Nevada. It is located along Spring Creek. History Eightmile was originally the location of Eight Mile Station, a station on the route of the Pony Express. It was later a stagecoach station along the Central Overland Route across the territory and then the state of Nevada. On March 23, 1863, the Goshutes, led by White Horse, burned the station and killed the keeper, which started the Overland or Goshute War. During the American Civil War and during the Snake War, this station was also frequently occupied by Union Army troops and later U. S. Army regulars from Fort Ruby, it was one of several outposts used to defend and keep open this transportation route that linked the western states and territories to the eastern part of the country before the completion of the construction of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. Pony Express
The Pony Express was an American express mail service that used relays of horse-mounted riders. It operated from April 3, 1860, to October 26, 1861, between Missouri and California. It was operated by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company. During its 18 months of operation, the Pony Express reduced the time for messages to travel between the east and west US coast to about 10 days. It became the west's most direct means of eastwest communication before the first transcontinental telegraph was established (October 24, 1861), and was vital for tying the new U.S. state of California with the rest of the United States. Despite a heavy subsidy, the Pony Express was not a financial success and went bankrupt in 18 months, when a faster telegraph service was established.
