Gordon Shrake
Gordon Wells Shrake (February 4, 1937 - May 30, 2024) was a former municipal and provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He first served as a City of Calgary Alderman from 1971 until 1982 when he was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, serving from 1982 to 1993. Alderman Shrake was first elected to Calgary city council on October 25, 1971. He served as a municipal councilor until resigning after winning a seat in the provincial legislature in 1982. MLA While still serving as an Alderman for the City of Calgary, Shrake ran as a Progressive Conservative candidate in the 1982 Alberta general election. He won the electoral district of Calgary Millican defeating New Democrat candidate David Swann by a wide margin. He would run for his second term in office in the 1986 Alberta general election. Alberta ( ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is part of Western Canada and is one of the three prairie provinces. The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. The Legislative Assembly currently has 87 members, elected first past the post from single-member electoral districts. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, as the viceregal representative of the King of Canada. The Legislative Assembly and the Lieutenant Governor together make up the unicameral Alberta Legislature. 1982 Alberta General Election
The 1982 Alberta general election was held on November 2, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Less than four years had passed since the Progressive Conservatives won their landslide victory in 1979. Premier Peter Lougheed decided to call a snap election to catch fledgling new parties off guard, most notably the separatist Western Canada Concept which was capitalizing on anger over Lougheed's perceived weakness in dealings with the federal government, in particular his acceptance of the hugely unpopular National Energy Program. The WCC's Gordon Kesler had won a by-election earlier in the year, and Lougheed decided that it would be wise to stage a showdown with the WCC sooner rather than later. Calgary-Millican was a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1971 to 1993. History The Calgary-Millican electoral district was created in the 1970 electoral boundary re-distribution from part of the Calgary-East and Calgary South electoral districts. The Calgary-Millican electoral district was abolished in the 1993 electoral boundary re-distribution, where the district was split, with the south part of the riding joined Calgary Shaw and the north merged with Calgary-Forest Lawn to re-form Calgary East electoral district. David Swann
David Richard Swann (born June 19, 1949) is a Canadian medical doctor and politician. He was the leader of the Alberta Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition in the Alberta Legislature from December 2008 until resigning as party leader in September 2011. He returned as interim leader of the Alberta Liberal Party on February 1, 2015, following the resignation of Raj Sherman and led the party through the 2015 provincial election. Swann is, to date, the last Liberal elected to the Alberta Legislature. Family and early life Swann was born in Taber, Alberta, and was raised in a middle-class family on the edge of downtown Calgary. The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Together those two parties received 55 percent of the vote to the Conservative's 44 percent. The Conservatives sustained a net loss of only two seats in the legislature. David John Haskins (born 24 April 1957, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England), better known as David J, is a British alternative rock musician, producer, and writer. He is the bassist for the gothic rock band Bauhaus and for Love and Rockets.
