Gordon Grieve
Gordon Glendinning Grieve (21 August 1912 – 17 October 1993) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. Biography Grieve was born in 1912 in Otahuti, Southland, a locality north-west of Invercargill. He attended Otahuti School and became a farmer. On 20 April 1938, he married Ena (Willena) Young, the daughter of William Young. Her family was also from Otahuti and her father was to become a member of the Legislative Council in 1950. They were to have three daughters. Grieve was a rugby referee for 15 years. He was president of the Central Southland Rugby Referees' Association from 1949 to 1955. He was active with the Southland A & P Association and at shows, he judged and inspected cattle and sheep. In 1946, he was the foundation president of the Southland Southdown Breeders Club. Capital Punishment In New Zealand
Capital punishment in New Zealand – the process of sentencing convicted offenders to death for the most serious crimes (capital crimes) and carrying out that sentence, as ordered by a legal system – first appeared in a codified form when New Zealand became a British colony in 1840. It was first carried out with a public hanging in Victoria St, Auckland in 1842, while the last execution occurred in 1957 at Mount Eden Prison, also in Auckland. In total, 85 people have been executed in New Zealand. Capital punishment was first abolished for murder in 1941 by the First Labour Government, with all death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. However, the succeeding First National Government reinstated it in 1949, following which eight more executions took place in the period up to 1957. Hugh Templeton
Hugh Campbell Templeton (born 24 March 1929) is a former New Zealand diplomat, politician and member of parliament for the National Party. Early life and family Templeton was born in Wyndham, Southland, in 1929. He was educated at Gore High School, King's High School, the University of Otago, and then as a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford University in 1952–53. He married Russian-born New Zealand novelist Natasha Templeton in Wellington in 1961. His brother, Malcolm, was a Foreign Service officer who represented New Zealand at the United Nations. His twin brother Ian is a veteran press gallery journalist and author. From 1954 to 1969 Templeton served with the New Zealand Department of External Affairs, first in London, and then in Wellington, before going as the last Deputy High Commissioner of Western Samoa to prepare specially for independence and then to New York to assist secure Samoa's post independence aid programmes, under Guy Powles. George Richard Herron
George Richard Herron (1888–1967) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. Biography Herron was born in Pukerau in 1888. He worked as a blacksmith for five years, before farming for 33 years. He was associated with the Farmers Union, the breeding of Ayrshire cows and the Southland A & P Association. He represented the Southland electorate of Awarua from 1944 until his retirement in 1957. Herron replaced James Hargest Brigadier James Hargest, (4 September 1891 – 12 August 1944) was an officer of the New Zealand Military Forces, serving in both the First and Second World Wars. Queen's Service Order
The Queen's Service Order, established by royal warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 13 March 1975, is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office".
