James Goodfellow
James Goodfellow OBE, KCHS, FIIE (born 1937) is a Scottish inventor. In 1966, he patented personal identification number (PIN) technology and an automated teller machine (ATM). He is generally considered the inventor of the modern ATM. Goodfellow was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, where he later attended St Mirin's Academy. As a 28-year-old development engineer at Kelvin Hughes, he was given the project of developing an automatic cash dispenser in 1965. His system accepted a machine readable encrypted card, with a numerical PIN keypad. The invention received UK Patent No. 1,197,183 with a priority date of 2 May 1966. In 1967, the world's first ATM was in Enfield in North London, which used a rival design by John Shepherd-Barron of De La Rue that accepted cheques impregnated with a radioactive chemical. Syd Goodfellow
Sydney Goodfellow (6 July 1915 – 1998) was an English footballer. He made 303 league appearances in the Football League either side of World War II. He began his professional career with Port Vale in 1936, and also played for Glentoran and Rochdale before the outbreak of the war in 1939. He signed with Chesterfield after the war, before joining Doncaster Rovers in 1948. He helped the club to the Third Division North title in 1949–50. After this success he spent two years with Oldham Athletic, before seeing out his Football League career at Accrington Stanley in 1953. He later turned out for non-League sides Wellington Town, Stafford Rangers, and Oswestry Town, before emigrating to Australia in 1961. Peter Goodfellow (born 1953) is a New Zealand businessman and politician, served as President of the New Zealand National Party from 2009 to 2022. Political career Goodfellow was a long-time National Party activist. On 2 August 2009, he succeeded Judy Kirk as Party President. In 2009, Goodfellow faced early opposition from within the party, with reports that events instigating the breakup of his marriage had soured his relationship with the party directors. Peter Neville Goodfellow, (born 4 August 1951) is a British geneticist best known for his work on sex determination and the ''SRY'' gene that encodes testis determining factor. He was Arthur Balfour Professor of Genetics at the University of Cambridge from 1992 to 1996. Education Goodfellow completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology at the University of Bristol in 1972 and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford in 1975 for research supervised by Walter Bodmer. Awards and honours Goodfellow was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1992. He was one of the recipients, together with Robin Lovell-Badge, of the 1995 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine. Michael Goodfellow (born 8 October 1988) is a retired Scottish curler. Career As a youth, Goodfellow played in two Winter Universiades, one in 2009 and 2011. He played lead at the 2009 Winter Universiade for the British team, skipped by John Hamilton. They finished 7th. He was the British alternate at the 2011 Winter Universiade, on a team skipped by Glen Muirhead that finished 4th. Despite being the team's alternate, he played in 8 round robin games. On the World Curling Tour, Goodfellow played lead for Jamie Dick for 2008–09 before joining with Muirhead for 2009–10 to play lead for him. Michael Goodfellow
Michael Goodfellow OBE (born 8 January 1941) is a British professor in microbial systematics, specialising in Actinomycetota taxonomy. He earlier served as head of the School of Biology in University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is also the chair of the Bergey's Manual Trust. Education Goodfellow was born in Ecclefechan, Scotland and went to school at Carlisle Grammar School. He did both his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Liverpool, graduating with PhD in 1966. Marc David Goodfellow (born 20 September 1981) is an English former footballer who played as a left-sided winger. He began his career with Stoke City in 2000, and played on Iceland with ÍBV the following year. He transferred to Bristol City in 2004, who in turn sent him out on loan to Port Vale, Swansea City, and Colchester United.
