Gongsan-dong
Gongsan-dong is an administrative ''dong'' in Dong-gu, in northeastern Daegu, South Korea. It has an area of 83.78 km², most of which is vacant; its population is only 18,177. Slightly more than half of the people live in the dong's 38 apartment blocks. The ''dong'' was first constituted in 1981. For much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was divided into two administrative ''dong'', but these were reunited into Gongsan-dong in 1998. Gongsan Dam, which supplies drinking water for much of northern Daegu, is also located within the boundaries of Gongsan-dong. Land use in much of the ''dong'' is restricted due to regulations protecting the water supply and natural environment. Legal dong Because of the relatively low population density, Gongsan-dong encompasses a total of 14 legal ''dong''. Daegu city itself lies in the southwestern part of Korean Peninsula. It has a population of 343,678. The district covers 182.35 km², for about 20% of Daegu's total area. Daegu
Daegu (, , literally 'large hill', 대구광역시), formerly spelled Taegu and officially known as the Daegu Metropolitan City, is a city in South Korea. It is the third-largest urban agglomeration in South Korea after Seoul and Busan; it is the third-largest official metropolitan area in the nation with over 2.5 million residents; and the second-largest city after Busan in the Yeongnam region in southeastern Korean Peninsula. Gongsan Dam
Gongsan Dam is a dam in Jimyo-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, South Korea. Built across the Donghwacheon stream flowing south from Palgongsan Palgongsan, also Palgong Mountain, and previously called Gongsan during the Goryeo dynasty, is a mountain in southeastern South Korea, lying on an outlier of the Taebaek range. It stands on the northeastern border between Daegu metropolitan ..., the dam is responsible for securing the water supply for much of northern Daegu. The dam's construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1981. Since then, the use of much of the surrounding land has been restricted, due to concerns that development might lead to a loss of water quality. Shin Sung-gyeom
Sin Sung-gyeom (; d. 927) was a Korean general during the turbulent Later Three Kingdoms period in the early 10th century. Born in Gwanghaeju (present-day Chuncheon), he became a general in the kingdom of Taebong. He was instrumental in helping Wang Geon, who later founded the state of Goryeo to achieve power. He is widely viewed as the founder of the Pyeongsan Sin clan, which includes the famous actress Shin Se-kyung. Shin is remembered today for giving his life for Wang Geon in the aftermath of a rout of their forces by Hubaekje near present-day Daegu. According to the legend, the two exchanged armor so that the king would be able to escape the battlefield. While Wang Geon escaped the battlefield, Shin and the remaining army fought bravely against the Hubaekje army. But eventually his army was routed and in the woods Shin was shot with arrows and was killed by the enemy. He was beheaded and his head was sent to Gyeon Hwon, King of Hubaekje. Donghwasa
Donghwasa, also Donghwa Temple, is a Buddhist temple of the Jogye Order in northern Daegu, South Korea. The temple is located on the south side of Mt. Palgongsan, within the boundaries of Dohak-dong, Dong-gu, near Daegu's northern border. The name means "Temple of Paulownia Blossoms." History Donghwasa Temple (Korean: 桐華寺; 동화사) was originally established as Yugasa Temple in 493 by Ven. Geukdal. According to the Donghwasa Temple Record Monument, erected in 1931, it was renamed by Patriarch Ven. Simji in 832. The name “Donghwa (桐華; literally ‘Korean paulownia flower’)” came from a legend that the Korean paulownia bloomed even in winter at that time so people regarded it as an auspicious sign. According to the Samgungnyusa, Vinaya Master Jinpyo gave some bones with sutras engraved on them to Ven. Yeongsim, who later gave them to Patriarch Simji.
