Godfrey Agnew
Sir (William) Godfrey Agnew (11 October 1913 – 10 December 1995) was a British civil servant. Agnew was born as William Charles Agnew in Kent on 11 October 1913 and was educated at Tonbridge School. In 1936 he became a solicitor in the Public Trustee's office, he joined the Royal Artillery at the start of the Second World War, he received a bad back injury caused by a bad landing during parachute training. Agnew worked as Senior Clerk of the Privy Council Office from 1946 to 1951, before serving as Deputy Clerk until 1953. He was Clerk of the Privy Council from 1953 to 1974, and was made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1965. Clerk Of The Privy Council (United Kingdom)
The Clerk of the Privy Council is a senior civil servant in His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, being Head of the Privy Council Office. This historic office is less powerful now than it once was and than its Canadian equivalent, whose holder serves ''ex officio'' as Head of the Canadian Civil Service, whereas these roles in the UK have been divided between the Cabinet Secretary and the Head of HM Civil Service. Until 1859 there were multiple — usually four — clerks of the Privy Council. Three of the four positions then extant were progressively abolished in the 19th century until only one remained in 1859. Knight Commander Of The Royal Victorian Order
The Royal Victorian Order (french: Ordre royal de Victoria) is a dynastic order of knighthood established in 1896 by Queen Victoria. It recognises distinguished personal service to the British monarch, Canadian monarch, Australian monarch, or New Zealand monarch, members of the monarch's family, or to any viceroy or senior representative of the monarch. The present monarch, King Charles III, is the sovereign of the order, the order's motto is ''Victoria'', and its official day is 20 June. The order's chapel is the Savoy Chapel in London. Neville Leigh
Sir Neville Egerton Leigh (4 June 1922 – 1 August 1994) was a senior British civil servant, descended from a Cheshire gentry family of medieval origin. Life The younger son of Captain Cecil Egerton Leigh and Gladys Durell Barnes, Neville Leigh was educated at Charterhouse School. Commissioned in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, from 1951 Leigh served in the RAF Intelligence. He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1967. Leigh served as Clerk to the Privy Council between 1974 and 1984, and was promoted Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1980 Birthday Honours. Leigh married Denise Branch, daughter of Colonel Cyril Denzil Branch MC, on 20 May 1944; they had a daughter and two sons, the younger being the Conservative MP Sir Edward Leigh. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a head of state (including the Pope) or representative for service to the monarch, the church or the country, especially in a military capacity. Knighthood finds origins in the Greek ''hippeis'' and ''hoplite'' (ἱππεῖς) and Roman '' eques'' and ''centurion'' of classical antiquity. In the Early Middle Ages in Europe, knighthood was conferred upon mounted warriors. During the High Middle Ages, knighthood was considered a class of lower nobility.
