Glossary Of Sikhism
The following list consists of concepts that are derived from both Sikh and Indian tradition. The main purpose of this list is to disambiguate multiple spellings, to make note of spellings no longer in use for these concepts, to define the concept in one or two lines, to make it easy for one to find and pin down specific concepts, and to provide a guide to unique concepts of Sikhism all in one place. A ; Amrit: elixir of immortality - the sanctified nectar or sugar water substitute used in ceremonies. It is prepared by stirring it in an iron bowl with the double-edged sword and continuous recitation of five banis by the five selected members of the Khalsa. ; Amritdhari: baptized Sikh who has undergone the Khalsa ceremony. Concept
Concepts are defined as abstract ideas. They are understood to be the fundamental building blocks of the concept behind principles, thoughts and beliefs. They play an important role in all aspects of cognition. As such, concepts are studied by several disciplines, such as linguistics, psychology, and philosophy, and these disciplines are interested in the logical and psychological structure of concepts, and how they are put together to form thoughts and sentences. The study of concepts has served as an important flagship of an emerging interdisciplinary approach called cognitive science. Japji Sahib
''Japji Sahib'' (Punjabi: ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ) is the Sikh thesis, that appears at the beginning of the ''Guru Granth Sahib'' – the scripture of the Sikhs. It was composed by Guru Angad, and is mostly the writings of Guru Nanak. It begins with ''Mool Mantra'' and then follow 38 ''paudis'' (stanzas) and completed with a final ''Salok by Guru Angad'' at the end of this composition.HS Singha (2009), The Encyclopedia of Sikhism, Hemkunt Press, , page 110 The 38 stanzas are in different poetic meters. Daya (Sikhism)
Daya (Gurmukhi: ਦਯਾ or ਦਇਆ) or compassion is a fundamental teaching of the Sikh religion and teachings can be found on Daya. The other four qualities are ''truth'' (sat), ''contentment'' (santokh), ''humility'' (nimrata) and ''love'' (pyaar). These five qualities are essential to a Sikh and it is their duty to meditate and recite the Gurbani so that these virtues become a part of their mind. The importance of Daya can be seen from the following Shabads from Guru Granth Sahib: This concept says to not ignore tragedies that take place in the world but to face them head-on and do whatever is possible within one's means. As a Sikh one must feel the pain and suffering of other people involved in any tragedy. Nitnem
''Nitnem'' ( Punjabi: ਨਿਤਨੇਮ) (literally ''Daily Routine'') is a collection of Sikh hymns (''Gurbani'') to be read minimally 3 different times of the day. These are mandatory and to be read by every Amritdhari Sikh as expressed in the Sikh Rehat Maryada. Optionally additional prayers may be added to a Sikh's ''nitnem''. There are five hymns ''(Five Banis)'' to be done during '' Amrit Vela'' (early morning), the ''Rehras Sahib'' hymn for the evening and ''Kirtan Sohila'' for the night. The morning and evening prayers should be followed by an ''Ardaas''. Nām Japō
In Sikhism, Nām Japō (Gurmukhi ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ), also known as Naam Japna or Naam Simran, refers to the meditation or contemplation of the various Names of God (or qualities of God), especially the chanting of the word "Waheguru" ('Wonderful Teacher') representing the formless being, the creator of all the forms, and the being omnipresent in all forms. Less commonly, it is the vocal singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib; the singing of hymns is generally also referred to as ''Nām Riramon Bunman''. Singing of hymns with musical accompaniment is generally referred to as '' kirtan''. While contemplating God's names a devotee is able to get '' nām'', the divine connection with God. Mul Mantra
The Mūl Mantar ( pa, ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ, ) is the opening verse of the Sikh scripture, the ''Guru Granth Sahib''. It consists of thirteen words in the Punjabi language, written in Gurmukhi script, and are the most widely known among the Sikhs. They summarize the essential teaching of Guru Nanak,Eleanor Nesbitt, "Sikhism: a very short introduction", , Oxford University Press, pp. 22-24 thus constituting a succinct doctrinal statement of Sikhism. It has been variously translated, with the interpretation of the first two words particularly contested. These are rendered as "There is one god", "One reality is", "This being is one" and others. Manmukh
Within Sikhism, Manmukh ( Punjabi: ਮਨਮੁਖ ) literally means "to follow one's mind or desires". It appears as a noun to describe a self-serving individual who follows their own desires. Definition The word ''Manmukh'' consists of two parts: Man and Mukh. ''Man'' means "one's own mind or one's own desires" and ''Mukh'' literally means "face", so the full word conveys the message "One who follows whichever way his or her mind leads or goes"; "one who follows his or her desires"; "one who does as his or her mind dictates". The Manmukh is attached to worldly desires, material wealth, worldly allurements and sensual enjoyments. His desires and his needs are unlimited. To be a Manmukh is to follow one's own mind or desires without regards for anyone else. A person who is self-centred is called a Manmukh. Kirat Karō
Kirat Karō (Gurmukhi: ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰੋ) is one of the three pillars of Sikhism, the others being Naam Japo and Vaṇḍ chakkō. The term means to earn an honest, pure and dedicated living by exercising one's God-given skills, abilities, talents and hard labour for the benefit and improvement of the individual, their family and society at large. This means to work with determination and focus by the sweat of one's brow and not to be lazy and to waste one's life to time. Meanwhile, ''Simran'' and dedication to the work of God, not personal gain, should be one's main motivation. Panj Kakkar
In Sikhism, the Five Ks ( pa, ਪੰਜ ਕਕਾਰ ) are five items that Guru Gobind Singh, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in 1699, commanded Khalsa Sikhs to wear at all times. They are: Kesh (Sikhism), ''kesh'' (unshorn hair and beard since the Sikh decided to keep it), ''kangha'' (a comb for the kesh, usually wooden), Kara (Sikhism), ''kara'' (a bracelet, usually made of iron or steel), ''kachera'' (an undergarment), and ''kirpan'' (a small curved sword of any size, shape or metal). The Five Ks are not just symbols, but articles of faith that collectively form the external identity and the Khalsa devotee's commitment to the ''Sikh rehni,'' 'Sikh way of life'. Khanda (religious Symbol)
The Khanda ( pa, ਖੰਡਾ, ) is the symbol of the Sikh faith which attained its current form around the 1930s during the Ghadar Movement. The modern Sikh symbol/logo is never written on or in any copy of the Guru Granth Sahib. The main symbol/logo traditionally used in the Guru Granth Sahib and Gurdwaras around the world is " Ek Onkar". Traditionally, it was very common to see "Ek Onkar" above the entrance to a Gurdwara, or on the front page of the Guru Granth Sahib. The other one was the Aad Chand. It is an amalgam of 3 symbols: * A double-edged khanda (sword) in the centre * A ''chakkar'' (chakram) * Two single-edged daggers, or kirpan, crossed at the bottom, which sit on either side of the khanda and chakkar. Kesh (Sikhism)
In Sikhism, kesh (sometimes kes) (Gurmukhi: ਕੇਸ) is the practice of allowing one's hair to grow naturally out of respect for the perfection of God's creation. The practice is one of The Five Kakaars, the outward symbols ordered by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699 as a means to profess the Sikh faith. The hair is combed twice daily with a kanga, another of the five Ks, and tied into a simple knot known as a ''joora'' or ''rishi knot''. This knot of hair is usually held in place with the kanga and covered by a turban. The 52 commands of Guru Gobind Singh written at Hazur Sahib at Nanded in the state of Maharashtra, mention that the kesh (hair) should be revered as the form of the Satguru (eternal guru) whom they consider as the same as god. Kaur
Kaur ( pa, ਕੌਰ (Gurmukhi), pa, کور (Shahmukhi) en, crown prince) (sometimes spelled as ''Kour''), is a surname or a part of a personal name primarily used by the Sikh and Hindu women of Punjab region. "Kaur" is also sometimes translated as "lioness", not because this meaning is etymologically derived from the name, but as a parallel to the Sikh male name "Singh," which means "lion." "Kaur" is recognized as “Princess” or "Spiritual Princess". It also goes back to Sanskrit word "Kumari" meaning girl or daughter, which was abridged to "Kuar" and then changed into "Kaur" by metathesis.
