Glenorn
Glenorn is a pastoral lease that has operated as both a sheep and cattle station. It is located about south east of Leonora and north east of Kookynie in the Goldfields of Western Australia, The Laverton to Leonora railway passes through the property and had five of its stops being located within the station boundaries. Initially established by the Horan brothers, who were butchers, in about 1903, the station was running cattle along with a small flock of sheep. The Horans were the first to take up pastoral pursuits in the area, which was mostly a gold mining centre. They noted that the area was rich in mulga and saltbush year round with abundant natural grasses following rain. The property was carrying a flock of about 2,000 sheep in 1921. Nambi
Nambi is a pastoral lease and sheep station located about north east of Leonora and south east of Leinster in the Goldfields of Western Australia. The station was established in 1899. The property was owned by the Leonora Pastoral company in 1925, who ran cattle on the leasehold. The company sold 129 mixed cattle at Midland Junction sales in December 1929, another 28 in January 1930, and another 30 in March 1930. Plans were underfoot to change to sheep as early as 1925 when Geo Sexton, one of company directors, arrived at the station to commence fencing in preparation for the arrival of sheep at the station. The station had also recently purchased eight trucks. By 1926 Nambi sold some of their first clip with 55 bales sold at the Perth sales in October 1926. and another 46 bales in 1928. Yundamindera Station
Yundamindera Station is a pastoral lease and sheep station located about north of Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It is situated next to the Mount Remarkable sheep station and Mount Celia Station. Dr Laver leased the station in 1904 and was struck by the similarity of the area to the Barkly Tableland in Queensland. It was the first pastoral pursuit that was established in the area. The area received of rain in 1910, which is well above average, of the fall coming in January. This resulted in excellent feed and herbage being available to cattle which thrived in the conditions. In 1923 Laver sold the leasehold to Mr T. H. Pearse of Gums Station near Burra, South Australia. At the time the station was stocked with approximately 1,400 head of cattle. Yuin Station
Yuin Station is a pastoral lease and sheep station located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. Situated approximately to the north-west of Yalgoo and northeast of Mullewa, the property occupies an area of and has a maximum carrying capacity of 15,370 sheep. The station was established in 1870 by Thomas Burges and was one of the first settlements in the area. In 1874 the Wittenooms moved 15,000 sheep from Bowes Station to Yuin. An outbreak of influenza wreaked havoc among the station employees in 1883. Sheep washing had just commenced at the station and the 25 crew members, all of whom were Aboriginal, were struck down, with several dying. Struck by drought between 1884 and 1886, the station had very little feed on the ground available for stock. Minara Station (Western Australia)
Minara Station is a pastoral lease that has operated as a sheep station and is now a cattle station in Western Australia. It is situated approximately east of Leonora and west of Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region. The station was established prior to 1920, when it was running sheep and owned by Messrs Fawcett and Robinson. By 1924 the owners were Fawcett and Venn. In 1928 Minara was stocked with 12,000 sheep and the shearing shed was being constructed. The station is currently owned by Minara Resources along with three other nearby properties: Nambi, Yundamindera and Glenorn. By 2018 all four stations were running a herd of cattle of 6500 head. Minara Resources Pty Ltd is one of the major mining companies of Australia, specializing in the mining of cobalt and nickel. It is one of the top ten nickel mines in Australia. Shorn
Sheep shearing is the process by which the woollen fleece of a sheep is cut off. The person who removes the sheep's wool is called a '' shearer''. Typically each adult sheep is shorn once each year (a sheep may be said to have been "shorn" or "sheared", depending upon dialect). The annual shearing most often occurs in a shearing shed, a facility especially designed to process often hundreds and sometimes more than 3,000 sheep per day. Sheep are shorn in all seasons, depending on the climate, management requirements and the availability of a woolclasser and shearers. Ewes are normally shorn prior to lambing in the warmer months, but consideration is typically made as to the welfare of the lambs by not shearing during cold climate winters. This is the regulation required method of packaging for wool, to keep it uncontaminated and readily identifiable.
