Glenoma, Washington
Glenoma is an unincorporated community in Lewis County located off U.S. Route 12, between the towns of Morton and Randle. The area is northeast of Riffe Lake. History Glenoma was originally named Vern and briefly as Verndale. The area was later renamed by Beverly Coiner, deriving the moniker by combining ''glen'', meaning "valley", and ''oma'', from the Hebrew word for "a measure of grain"; the name was construed to mean "fruitful valley". The official date of the creation of the town is unknown. The first covered swimming pool in Lewis County opened in Glenoma in 1961. Climate According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Glenoma has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. Education Students in the town are served by the White Pass School District. The Glenoma Elementary school was built in the 1920s. Area code 360 is the telephone area code for western Washington state outside metropolitan Seattle. It began service on January 15, 1995. The numbering plan area (NPA), which encompasses all of western Washington outside urban King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties and Bainbridge Island, was previously part of area code 206. Morton, Washington
Morton is a city in Lewis County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,036 at the 2020 census. History Morton was first settled in 1871 by James Fletcher. It was later named after Benjamin Harrison's Vice President, Levi P. Morton, in 1889. Morton was officially incorporated on January 7, 1913. Historic sources of revenue included logging, harvesting of cascara bark, and mining for cinnabar (mercury ore) in local mines. Morton was once known as the "tie mill capital of the world" in the 1950s. The longest railroad tie dock in the world ran along the railroad tracks east of Morton. Riffe Lake
Riffe Lake is a long reservoir on the Cowlitz River in the U.S. state of Washington. It was created in with the construction of Mossyrock Dam by Tacoma City Light (now Tacoma Power). Originally named Mossyrock Lake, then later as Davisson Lake after a utilities commissioner in Tacoma, the lake was renamed in 1976 after the community of Riffe, which was inundated by the lake. The residents of Kosmos and Nesika were also relocated as the lake's water level would submerge all of Nesika and much of Kosmos. The lake contains species of fish including rainbow and brown trout, landlocked coho, bass both large mouth and small mouth, bluegill, crappie, and perch. In 2017, Tacoma Power lowered the maximum water level of the lake by due to concerns that the Mossyrock Dam could fail during a major seismic event and cause catastrophic flooding. Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936.
