Glassford (; locally known as ''The Glesart'' ) is a small village located south of Hamilton, and north-east of Strathaven, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It has a population of roughly 500–600 people. Features include the 19th-century Parish Church, and the remains of the 17th-century church, both of which are category B listed buildings. The Avon Water offers fishing and walks. Peter Wedderburn, Lord Chesterhall
The Hon Peter Wedderburn, Lord Chesterhall (c. 1700–11 August 1756) was an 18th-century Scottish lawyer who rose to be a Senator of the College of Justice. Life He was born in Glassford (possibly at Glassford Castle) in Lanarkshire around 1700, the son of Alexander Wedderburn. His paternal grandfather was Sir Peter Wedderburn, Lord Gosford. He is presumed to have studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He passed the Scottish bar as an advocate in February 1715. He became an Assessor in Edinburgh and then Secretary to the Excise.An Historical Account of the Senators of the College of Justice: Brunton, Haig and Lockhart He acquired the estate of Chesterhall near Gladsmuir in East Lothian. Strathaven
Strathaven (; from gd, Strath Aibhne ) is a historic market town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is the largest settlement in Avondale. It is south of Hamilton. The Powmillon Burn runs through the town centre, and joins the Avon Water to the east of the town. The current estimated population is 8,000. The town was granted a royal charter in 1450, making the Town of Strathaven a burgh of barony. The A71, which connects Edinburgh and Irvine, passes through the town. History A Roman road passes close by, on the south side of the Avon Water; it led to the Roman fort at Loudoun Hill near Darvel. The origins of Strathaven Castle are obscure, but it is believed to have been held by the Bairds until after the end of the Wars of Scottish Independence in 1357. Avon Water
Avon Water, also known locally as the River Avon, is a river in Scotland, and a tributary of the River Clyde. Course The Avon Water rises in the hills on the boundary between East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire, close to the head of the Irvine Water. The river flows in a north easterly direction, following the A71 road past Drumclog, and running to the south of Strathaven, where the river enters a more pronounced valley. The Avon flows between the village of Glassford, and Stonehouse to the south, before merging with the smaller Cander Water just south of Larkhall. The river then skirts the west side of Larkhall in a deepening gorge, crossed by the disused Larkhall railway viaduct, built in 1904 for the Caledonian Railway. Beyond this the gorge is part of Chatelherault Country Park, to the south of Hamilton. James Struthers
James Struthers (1770–1807) was a late 18th century Scottish minister renowned for his orations during the Scottish Enlightenment in Edinburgh. Life He was born at Glassford in Lanarkshire on 31 October 1770. He studied at Glasgow University. He was licensed to preach around 1788. In the summer of 1791, aged 20, he was ordained as minister of the Relief Church on College Street in Edinburgh (just south of Old College) in place of Rev James Baine. In October 1793 he preached against the immorality of Rev David Gellatly of Haddington. In 1805 he is listed as an Extraordinary Director of the Beneficent Society of Edinburgh alongside George Baird (Principal of Edinburgh University) and Adam Rolland. He lived his final years in a flat at St Patrick Square in south Edinburgh. He died on 13 July 1807 and in buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. The grave lies midway along the main east path.
