Gladzor Gospels
Gladzor ( hy, Գլաձոր) is a village and the center of the Gladzor Municipality of the Vayots Dzor Province in Armenia. The historic 13th-century University of Gladzor is located in the village, and the 13th-century Proshaberd fortress is located 6-7 km to the north of the village. The village is immediately bordered by the town of Yeghegnadzor to the south. Vayots Dzor Province
Vayots Dzor ( hy, Վայոց Ձոր, ) is a province (''marz'') of Armenia. It lies at the southeastern end of the country, bordering the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan to the west and the Kalbajar District of Azerbaijan to the east. It covers an area of . With a population of only 52,324 (2011 census), it is the most sparsely populated province in the country. The capital and largest city of the province is the town of Yeghegnadzor. University Of Gladzor
University of Gladzor ( hy, Գլաձորի համալսարան, translit=Gladzori hamalsaran) was a medieval Armenian university, one of the two "great centres of learning" along with the University of Tatev () that were "essentially of a single tradition." It was established around 1280 by Nerses of Mush, a student of Vardan Areveltsi, and operated until 1340 and "left behind a rich intellectual heritage". The university grew out of the monastic center of learning of the Aghberts or Gladzor Monastery in the region of Vayots Dzor. It flourished under the patronage of the Orbelian and Proshian noble families. Gladzor had at least nine professors and around fifteen lecturers. The university's longtime head was Esayi of Nich (Nchetsi), who led the university until 1331. He was succeeded by the head teacher Tiratur. Proshaberd
Proshaberd ( hy, Պռոշաբերդ, also Boloraberd) is a fortress built in the 13th century by Prince Prosh Khaghbakian. It is about north of the town of Vernashen in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. Almost one kilometer east is the 14th century Spitakavor Church dedicated to Saint Astvatsatsin. Folklore of Proshaberd Local folklore tells that long ago the Persians besieged the fortress of Proshaberd which had very strong walls and its own water supply that led to the structure. Due to its impenetrable walls they were not successful, and after several attempts at trying to bring the fortress down they decided to cut off its water supply. Soldiers were unsuccessfully able to locate it, so the leader was advised by one of his men to keep a mule thirsty for seven days and nights and then to let it go for it will search for water. Yeghegnadzor
Yeghegnadzor ( hy, Եղեգնաձոր) is a town and urban municipal community in southern Armenia, serving as the provincial capital of Vayots Dzor Province. It is located at a road distance of 123 km south of the capital Yerevan, on the shores of Srkghonk River ( hy, Սրկղոնք), at a height of 1194 meters above sea level. As per the 2016 official estimate, Yeghegnadzor had a population of around 6,600. However, as of the 2011 census, the population of the town was 7,944.
