Gladiators (franchise)
''Gladiators'' is a sports entertainment television show that was an international success during the 1990s and early 2000s with versions of the show being filmed for local broadcasters in the United States, the United Kingdom, Finland, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Nigeria, and Denmark. However, Russia, Germany, South Korea and the Bahamas would also compete in international shows during the series, despite the fact that they did not have their own domestic series. After a lengthy break, ''Gladiators'' was revived in 2008 in the UK, the US and Australia; in 2009 Lebanon created their own series featuring competitors from all over the Arab region and in 2012 Sweden brought back their version which proved most successful of all revivals, with another revival airing in Finland during 2017 and 2019. American Gladiators (1989 TV Series)
''American Gladiators'' is an American competition television program that aired weekly in syndication from September 1989 to May 1996. The series matched a cast of amateur athletes against each other, as well as against the show's own "gladiators", in contests of strength and agility. The concept was originally created in 1982 by Johnny C. Ferraro and Dan Carr. Carr gathered the Gladiators and hosted the show, and Ferraro financed and produced the original competition at Erie Tech High School in Erie, Pennsylvania so Ferraro could have the event on film as to shop the new creation. In 1983 Ferraro financed, developed and packaged the American Gladiators as a movie project. In 1984 Carr sold his interest in a literary purchase to Flor-Jon Films. Ferraro had been the main driving force behind the American Gladiators brand since 1982. In 1987, Flor-Jon Films then licensed the unscripted rights to The Samuel Goldwyn Company (now part of MGM). International Gladiators 1
''International Gladiators 1'' was the first international competition of the ''Gladiators'' franchise, consisting of seven episodes. Held at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, England, the competition pitted contenders and Gladiators from the United States ('' American Gladiators''), the United Kingdom (''Gladiators''), Finland (''Gladiaattorit'') and Russia, who did not have a domestic series at the time of production, against one another. This was the final series in the ''Gladiators'' franchise to star British Gladiators Scorpio (Nikki Diamond) and Shadow ( Jefferson King). Diamond retired at the end of the series, while King was fired after having been discovered to have taken steroids. Arena Birmingham (known for sponsorship reasons as Utilita Arena Birmingham, and previously as The Barclaycard Arena and originally as the National Indoor Arena) is an indoor arena and sporting venue in central Birmingham, United Kingdom. It is owned by parent company the NEC Group. When it was opened in 1991, it was the largest indoor arena in the UK. The arena was renamed Utilita Arena Birmingham on 15 April 2020. ''Gladiators'' is a British television sports entertainment game show. An adaptation of the American programme and its format, '' American Gladiators'', and was produced by LWT for ITV and broadcast from 10 October 1992 to 1 January 2000. The programme's format sees four contestants, two male and two female, compete in a series of physical events against the show's "Gladiators", eventually competing in one final event, with contestants aiming to secure a place in the grand final and be crowned champion for their respective series. There were no prizes awarded to the winner in any episode, until the final. The show was presented by Ulrika Jonsson throughout its original run, alongside John Fashanu (1992–96, 1999–2000) and Jeremy Guscott (1997–98), with John Sachs providing commentary on each event, and John Anderson refereeing the contests. ''Gladiators: Train 2 Win'' is a children's spin-off of the British television series ''Gladiators'' and was based on its American counterpart ''Gladiators 2000'' (1994–1996). Aired on ITV, the series featured younger contestants playing adapted versions of the games featured in the parent series, all while being mentored and assisted by a captain Gladiator. Four series of the programme were broadcast, airing from 2 September 1995 to 13 March 1998. Synopsis The first series focused heavily on fitness education, and involved each of the young contenders answering questions relating to health & fitness while competing against each other playing specially adapted games. This series was presented by Sharron Davies, who at the time, was starring in the parent series as Amazon, and Daley Thompson. ''Gladiators 2000'' is a children's game show and spin-off of '' American Gladiators''. It was hosted by Ryan Seacrest and Maria Sansone (replaced by Valarie Rae Miller in Season 2). Season 5 ''American Gladiators'' grand champion Peggy Odita served as head referee. It premiered on September 17, 1994 and ran until May 11, 1996. This show was co-produced by One World Entertainment then a division of MTV Networks. It was often partnered with its parent show in syndication, although some markets ran it independently. Like ''AG'', the series was produced by Four Point Entertainment, and distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Television. In response to NBC's 2008 revival of ''American Gladiators'', the show was brought back in syndicated reruns for the 2008–2009 television season.
