Giusi Nicolini
Giusi Nicolini (born Giuseppina Maria Nicolini, 5 March 1961) is an Italian politician, former Mayor of Lampedusa e Linosa. Biography A member of the Legambiente environmentalist association, after having been Deputy Mayor and Councilor for the Environment of Lampedusa e Linosa from 1983 to 1988, Nicolini is elected Mayor at the 2012 local elections. After the 2013 migrant shipwreck near to the shores of Lampedusa, in which more than 300 migrants have drowned, Nicolini asked to the European Union to realize a new European law on sanctuary and immigration rules. Due to her several efforts in order to promote integration and solidarity, Nicolini has been awarded with the UNESCO Award for Peace in 2017. Legambiente is an Italian environmentalist association with roots in the anti-nuclear movement that developed in Italy and throughout the Western world in the second half of the '70s. Founded in 1980 as part of the ARCI, it later became a stand-alone organisation. 2012 Italian Local Elections
The 2012 Italian local elections were held on 6–7 May, with a second round on 20–21 May. In Italy, direct elections were held in 948 municipalities: in each comune, municipality (''comune'') were chosen mayor and members of the City Council. Of the 948 municipalities, 28 were provincial capitals and only 176 had a population higher than 15,000 inhabitants (10,000 for Sicily). Citizens living in Italy who were 18 or over on election day were entitled to vote in the local council elections. The deadline for voters to register to vote in the 6–7 May elections was midday on Tuesday 3 April 2012. For the first time there weren't provincial elections around Italy because they were abolished by the Law n.3660 of 4 December 2011. 2013 Lampedusa Migrant Shipwreck
On 3 October 2013, a boat carrying migrants from Libya to Italy sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa. It was reported that the boat had sailed from Misrata, Libya, but that many of the migrants were originally from Eritrea, Somalia and Ghana. An emergency response involving the Italian Coast Guard resulted in the rescue of 155 survivors. On 12 October it was reported that the confirmed death toll after searching the boat was 359, but that further bodies were still missing; a figure of "more than 360" deaths was later reported. A second shipwreck occurred from Lampedusa on 11 October, within the Maltese search and rescue zone, but closer to Lampedusa. 2017 Italian Local Elections
The 2017 Italian local elections were held on Sunday 11 June. If necessary, a run-off vote was held on Sunday 25 June. The term of mayors and councils will last five years, unless an early election is triggered. In the autonomous regions of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Aosta Valley the elections will be held on 7 May.
