Girls Mountain
Girls Mountain is a glaciated mountain summit located in the Chugach Mountains, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The peak is situated east of Valdez, north-northwest of Thompson Pass, and west of the Richardson Highway. Precipitation runoff from the mountain and meltwater from its glaciers drains into tributaries of the Tsina River, which in turn is part of the Copper River drainage basin. History The Girls Mountain name was officially adopted in 1964, by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names after being named in 1963 by Austin Post of the United States Geological Survey. The name was suggested by the International Geophysical Year benchmark, "Station Girls, 1957", cemented into the mountain's bedrock summit. The first ascent of the peak was made in 1957 by Austin Post and USGS party who placed the benchmark. Chugach Mountains
The Chugach Mountains of southern Alaska are the northernmost of the several mountain ranges that make up the Pacific Coast Ranges of the western edge of North America. The range is about long and wide, and extends from the Knik and Turnagain Arms of the Cook Inlet on the west to Bering Glacier, Tana Glacier, and the Tana River on the east. It is bounded on the north by the Matanuska, Copper, and Chitina rivers. The highest point of the Chugach Mountains is Mount Marcus Baker, at , but with an average elevation of , most of its summits are not especially high. The term benchmark, bench mark, or survey benchmark originates from the chiseled horizontal marks that surveyors made in stone structures, into which an angle-iron could be placed to form a "bench" for a leveling rod, thus ensuring that a leveling rod could be accurately repositioned in the same place in the future. __NOTOC__ The Worthington Glacier is a valley glacier located adjacent to Thompson Pass in the southeastern mainland section of the U.S. state of Alaska. Geography Worthington Glacier is Located on the Richardson Highway at milepost east of Valdez, it was listed as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. The International Geophysical Year (IGY; french: Année géophysique internationale) was an international scientific project that lasted from 1 July 1957 to 31 December 1958. It marked the end of a long period during the Cold War when scientific interchange between East and West had been seriously interrupted. Austin Post (photographer)
Austin S. Post (16 March 1922 – 12 November 2012) was a photographer, glaciologist, and mountaineer known for his aerial photography of the mountains and glaciers of North America, particularly the North Cascades of Washington and Glacier Bay, Alaska. Post worked for many years as a research scientist for the United States Geological Survey and was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in 2004, despite not having graduated from high school. Many of his photographs were used in the ''Cascade Alpine Guide'' series by Fred Beckey. Post named Bradford Washburn as a photographic influence. He lived on Vashon Island, Washington.
