Girl Defined is a Christian lifestyle blog and YouTube channel run by sisters Bethany Beal and Kristen Clark which focuses on purity culture and navigating mainstream America as an evangelical. History The success of Girl Defined was built off the failure of the sister's first project, bairdsisters.com. After bairdsisters.com failed to gain traction the pair rebranded to focus on high school and college aged girls. In 2016 the sisters began posting videos on YouTube and published their first book, ''Girl Defined: God’s Radical Design for Beauty, Femininity, and Identity''. In 2018 Girl Defined became a meme after YouTubers Cody Ko and Noel Miller featured Girl Defined's content on their series ''That's Cringe''. Purity culture is a subculture within Christianity which emphasizes subjective individual "purity," generally associated with female chastity. Components Purity culture places a strong emphasis on abstinence from sexual intercourse before marriage. Dating is discouraged entirely to avoid pre-marital sex. Woman and girls are told to cover up and dress modestly to avoid supposedly arousing sexual urges in men and boys. Purity culture also emphasizes traditional gender roles. Masturbation is discouraged more strongly for women than for men. Purity balls A purity ball is a formal dance event. The events are attended by fathers and their teenage daughters in order to promote virginity until marriage. Typically, daughters who attend a purity ball make a virginity pledge to remain sexually abstinent until marriage. Cody Michael Kolodziejzyk ( , Polish: ; born November 22, 1990), better known online as Cody Ko, is a Canadian YouTuber, comedian, podcaster and rapper. Kolodziejzyk first became popular on Vine in 2014, before becoming a commentary YouTuber on internet culture. His style of content is often crudely comedic and profane. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Kolodziejzyk graduated from Duke University with a degree in computer science. After his mobile app I'd Cap That became top of the App Store, he worked as an iOS developer at Fullscreen, but quit in 2016 to focus on his internet career full-time. He had around two million followers before Vine's discontinuation. After Vine was shut down, Kolodziejzyk shifted to YouTube commentary. TikTok, known in China as Douyin (), is a short-form video hosting service owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. It hosts user-submitted videos, which can range in duration from 15 seconds to 10 minutes. TikTok is an international version of Douyin, which was released in the Chinese market in September 2016. It launched in 2017 for iOS and Android in most markets outside of mainland China; however, it became available worldwide only after merging with another Chinese social media service, Musical.ly, on 2 August 2018. TikTok and Douyin have almost the same user interface but no access to each other's content. Their servers are each based in the market where the respective app is available.
