Gilmore Township is a township in Greene County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 240 at the 2020 census, down from 260 at the 2010 census. Geography The township is in southwest Greene County and is bordered to the south by the state of West Virginia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all of it land. The township is drained primarily by Dunkard Creek, an east-flowing tributary of the Monongahela River. The northwestern corner of the township is drained by tributaries of the Pennsylvania Fork of Fish Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Ohio River. Unincorporated communities in Gilmore Township include Ashtree, Triumph, Sandrock, Hero, Jollytown, and Pine Bank. Gilmore The Lion
Gilmore (1930–1950) was a lion who flew with aviator Colonel Roscoe Turner to promote the Gilmore Oil Company. After he grew too large for flying, Gilmore accompanied Turner in publicity appearances for the next ten years. Gilmore was born on February 7, 1930, at Goebel's Wild Animal Farm – a theme park and supplier of animals for Hollywood movies. The lion was sponsored by and named after the Gilmore Oil Company, whose icon was a red lion with the slogan "Roar with Gilmore". The company gave Turner $15,000 to buy the lion and a plane that was decorated to advertise Gilmore Oil. The Humane Society petitioned Turner to equip Gilmore with a parachute, which also resulted in enhancing the image of a "flying lion". The Gillmore Medal is a military decoration of the United States Army which was first issued on October 28, 1863. The medal is named after Maj. Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore who commanded Union troops attempting to seize Fort Wagner in 1863 during the American Civil War. Also called the Fort Sumter Medal, the Gillmore Medal commemorates the men who served in the fighting around Charleston, South Carolina, in 1863 and was presented to all Union soldiers who had served under General Gillmore’s command. The medal was pinned to the front of a military jacket from a swivel with no attached ribbon. Since the Gillmore Medal was issued on the local authority of General Gillmore, it was considered an unofficial decoration by the United States Army, but was permitted for wear on a military uniform. ''Gilmore'' (or ''Gillmore''), was a merchant ship built at Sulkea, opposite Calcutta, British India, in 1824. In 1829-30 she made a voyage delivering settlers to the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. She then made two voyages transporting convicts from England to Tasmania. The Gilmore Car Museum is an automobile museum located in Hickory Corners, Michigan, United States. The museum exhibits over 400 vintage and collector vehicles and motorcycles from all eras in several vintage buildings located on a 90-acre campus. The museum claims to be the largest automobile museum in North America. It is part of the MotorCities National Heritage Area. The museum opened in 1966 exhibiting the car collection of Donald S. Gilmore Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Los Angeles, California. It was opened in May 1934 and demolished in 1952, when the land was used to build CBS Television City. The stadium held 18,000. It was located next to Gilmore Field. The stadium was located west of Curson Avenue, surrounded by Beverly Boulevard, Fairfax Avenue and Third Street. The Stadium was used in a 3 Stooges 1934 short Three Little Pigskins. The stadium was built by Earl Gilmore, son of Arthur F. Gilmore and president of A. F. Gilmore Oil, a California-based petroleum company which was developed after Arthur struck oil on the family property.
