Gilbert Darrell
Gilbert Darrell (1923–2018) was a Bermuda politician and businessperson. He was a co-founder and former leader of the National Liberal Party. House Of Assembly Of Bermuda
The House of Assembly is the lower house of the Parliament of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda. The house has 36 Members of Parliament (MPs), elected for a term of five years in single seat constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. Bermuda now has universal voting with a voting age of 18 years. Voting is non-compulsory. The presiding officer of the House is called the Speaker. Term and election date Under section 49(2) of the Bermuda Constitution Order 1968, the Parliament of Bermuda must be dissolved by the Governor five years after its first meeting following the previous elections (unless the Premier advises the Governor to dissolve parliament sooner). Under section 51(1) of the Constitution, a general election must be held no later than three months after a dissolution. Legislative Council Of Bermuda
The Senate of Bermuda is the upper house of the Parliament of Bermuda, the other being the House of Assembly. The Senate consists of eleven members appointed by the Governor for five-year terms — five Senators are nominated by the Premier, three by the Leader of the Opposition, and three appointed at the discretion of the Governor. Of the three appointed by the Governor, the Senate elects one to serve as the President, and another to serve as the Vice President. The Senate serves as a house of review and serves as a road-block to constitutional change — the constitution requires a 2/3 super-majority (i.e., 8 votes) for a constitutional amendment, requiring the support of both the government and opposition appointees. The presiding officer of the Senate is the President of the Senate. Carol Bassett, who has been a Senator since 2003, was elected President in 2008, the first woman elected to the office. Flatts Village, Bermuda
Flatts Village is a small settlement in Bermuda, lying on the southern bank of Flatt's Inlet in Hamilton Parish, almost exactly between the territory's two incorporated municipalities, Hamilton and St. George's. History It is one of the earliest settled areas in Bermuda. Although the entrance to the inlet is now too shallow, due to sand, to allow entrance to large vessels, it was once a useful harbour. Its primary utility is often said to have been that it was remote from the old Capital, St. George's, and the customs officers located there. The Island's parliament occasionally met in Flatts, historically, although the official seat of government remained the State House, in St. George's until moving to Hamilton in 1815. A number of former warehouses and prominent homes survive in Flatts Village to speak of its more prosperous and active past. Smith's Parish, Bermuda
Smith's Parish is one of the nine parishes of Bermuda. It is named for English aristocrat Sir Thomas Smith/Smythe (1558–1625). Description It is located in the northeast of the main island, at the southern end of Harrington Sound, the large lagoon close to the main island's northeastern tip. It is joined to Devonshire Parish in the southwest and Hamilton Parish in the northeast. As with most of Bermuda's parishes, it covers just over 2.3 square miles (about 6.0 km² or 1500 acres). It had a population of 5,984 in 2016. Natural features in Smith's include Spittal Pond, John Smith's Beach, Devil's Hole, Gibbet Island, and Portuagese Rock. The National Liberal Party was a political party in Bermuda. It was established in 1985 as a breakaway from the Progressive Labour Party by a group of members opposed to the leadership of Lois Browne-Evans. Four sitting MPs left to join the party: Gilbert Darrell, Austin Thomas, Lionel Simmons and Walter Brangman, although Simmons later returned to the PLP.
