Gilbert Blue
Gilbert Blue (December 5, 1933 – June 11, 2016) was a Native American chief of the Catawba Nation in the U.S. state of South Carolina from 1973 until 2007. He was a grandson of chief Samuel Taylor Blue. Blue was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his time as chief, the Catawba received federal recognition. Rock Hill, South Carolina
Rock Hill is the largest city in York County, South Carolina and the fifth-largest city in the state. It is also the fourth-largest city of the Charlotte metropolitan area, behind Charlotte, Concord, and Gastonia (all located in North Carolina, unlike Rock Hill). Catawba People
The Catawba, also known as Issa, Essa or Iswä but most commonly ''Iswa'' (Catawba: '' Ye Iswąˀ'' – "people of the river"), are a federally recognized tribe of Native Americans, known as the Catawba Indian Nation. Their current lands are in South Carolina, on the Catawba River, near the city of Rock Hill. Their territory once extended into North Carolina, as well, and they still have legal claim to some parcels of land in that state. They were once considered one of the most powerful Southeastern tribes in the Carolina Piedmont, as well as one of the most powerful tribes in the South as a whole, with other, smaller tribes merging into the Catawba as their post-contact numbers dwindled due to the effects of colonization on the region. ''The Herald'' is a daily morning newspaper published in Rock Hill, South Carolina, in the United States. Its coverage is York, Chester, and Lancaster counties. In 1990, the paper was bought by The McClatchy Company of Sacramento, California. After McClatchy claimed bankruptcy in 2020, the paper was bought by Chatham Asset Management. History The paper became a semi-weekly in 1893. In 1911, it was converted to a daily afternoon paper — except Sundays — and renamed ''The Evening Herald''. That name and production schedule would endure for 75 years through several ownership changes. In March 1985, the company was purchased by the News & Observer Co. of Raleigh, North Carolina, then owned by descendants of Josephus Daniels. The new owners changed the Saturday edition to morning and got rid of the ''Evening'' part of the name. Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue that covers many of the internal organs (known as the mesothelium). The most common area affected is the lining of the lungs and chest wall. Less commonly the lining of the abdomen and rarely the sac surrounding the heart, or the sac surrounding the testis may be affected. Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma may include shortness of breath due to fluid around the lung, a swollen abdomen, chest wall pain, cough, feeling tired, and weight loss. Samuel Taylor Blue
Samuel Taylor Blue (c. 1871–1959) was a Native American Chief of the Catawba Nation from 1931–1938, 1941–1943, and 1956–1958. He was a leading figure in the tribal community, whether or not he was formally serving as Chief at that time. A strong advocate for cultural preservation, Blue and his mother, Margaret George Brown, were the last known native speakers of the Catawba language.
