Gibraltar City Hall
The Gibraltar City Hall is the former city hall for Gibraltar, centrally located within the city at the west end of John Mackintosh Square. It is the office of the Mayor of Gibraltar. History The building was a private mansion built in 1819(Benady, 18) by Aaron Cardozo, a prosperous merchant of Jewish Portuguese descent who had settled in Gibraltar, as his family home. It was the grandest private mansion ever seen in Gibraltar.(Bond, 48) The three- storey house dominated John Mackintosh Square. It was erected on the site of the old hospital and chapel of ''La Santa Misericordia'' ( en, The Holy Mercy) and later prison. As a non Protestant, Cardozo was not legally allowed to own property in Gibraltar. However, as he had been a close friend of Lord Nelson and had supplied his fleet, he was eventually granted a site to build a house in the ''Alameda'' on the condition that it be "''an ornament''" to the square. John Mackintosh Square
John Mackintosh Square (colloquially The Piazza) is a main square in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. It has been the centre of city life since the 14th century and takes its name from John Mackintosh, a local philanthropist. Gibraltar Chronicle
The ''Gibraltar Chronicle'' is a national newspaper published in Gibraltar since 1801. It became a daily in 1821. It is Gibraltar's oldest established daily newspaper and the world's second oldest English language newspaper to have been in print continuously. Its editorial offices are at Watergate House, and the print works are in the New Harbours industrial estate. History The ''Gibraltar Chronicle'' was born in direct relationship with the garrison. Casualty lists and news were slow in the 18th century and when five regiments from the Garrison of Gibraltar were promptly shipped to Egypt in 1801, the news was posted on a notice board in the Gibraltar Garrison Library. It was soon decided that the information should be made available to the public. Gustavo Bacarisas
Gustavo Bacarisa (1872–1971) GMH was a Gibraltarian painter. He was born in Gibraltar and died in Seville, Spain. His work, of a figurative style and varied themes, is characterised by the rich use of colour. He was married to Swedish artist and designer Elsa Jernås. Career Bacarisas studied in Paris, France and worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina until 1916. He later relocated to the Andalusian capital of Seville. He also travelled to Sweden in order to create the sets and figurines for the opera ''Carmen''. He did the same for the premier of ''El amor brujo'' ( es, Love, the Magician) at the ''Teatro Español'' in Madrid. During the Spanish civil war he relocated, this time to the Portuguese island of Madeira, returning in 1937 to Gibraltar. Royal Calpe Hunt
The Royal Calpe Hunt of the British Crown Colony of Gibraltar originated in 1812 as the Civil Hunt. The fox hunt was initially a civilian endeavour that began when a pair of English foxhounds were imported to Gibraltar. The hunts took place across the border, in the Campo de Gibraltar area of Spain. However, in 1814, the membership of the Hunt underwent a substantial change. Many officers of the Gibraltar garrison joined the Hunt, which shifted from a civilian to a military enterprise. That year, the name was changed to the Civil Calpe Hunt.
