Giardino Bellini
The Giardino Bellini (also known as Villa Bellini; English translation: "Bellini Garden") is the oldest urban park of Catania. It occupies 70.942 m². History Before the construction of a public garden, the area was occupied by the garden maze or labyrinth owned by the Ignazio Paternò Castello, prince of Biscari. In 1854, the Comune di Catania bought the area of the maze, and in 1864 started to adapt the area into a public garden. Starting from 1875, the municipality acquired several further areas surrounding the maze, and two years later the work to unify these areas was undertaken. A guide from 1867 reports the gardens housed swan and geese, deer and cows, an aviary, and an enclosure of monkeys. The park has a white marble bust depicting Vincenzo Bellini and completed by Tito Angiolini. The Giardino Bellini was finally inaugurated in 1883. Ignazio Paternò Castello
Ignazio Paternò Castello, Prince of Biscari (1722 - 1 September 1786) was an Italian polymath, antiquarian, and patron of the arts, who lived most of his life in his native Catania in Sicily. Biography Born to a wealthy noble family, he studied under the Theatines in Palermo. His fondness for he classical heritage and his endowment as a prince, allowed him to foster many excavations and restorations of ancient monuments in Sicily, and collected a large collection of Greco-Roman artifacts, including vases, urns, medals and coins. He helped further excavate part of the Roman theater and amphitheater at Catania. He was prolific at communicating his findings and writing to other scholars in the continent. Giardino Pacini
The Giardino Pacini (English translation: "Pacini Garden"), also known as Villa Pacini or the Villa Varagghi, is a small circular urban park located just south of the Porta Uzeda, on the seaward side of the elevated railway viaduct, in Catania, region of Sicily, Italy. It is partially encircled by Via Lavandaie and Via Jonica. Description The park, with a small central fountain, originally the Villa della Marina, was dedicated in 1978 to the memory of the opera composer Giovanni Pacini, and has a marble bust of the composer by Giovanni Dupré, as well as two headless statues of House of Bourbon, Bourbon kings of Naples. The River Amenano, now subterranean, once emptied into the sea at this point and the site was used by laundresses washing clothes ().
