Gianarrigo Rona
Gianarrigo Rona (born 18 November 1940 ) is an Italian bridge administrator and lawyer. He is the current President of the World Bridge Federation (WBF). Rona was born in Pavia in Lombardy, the third generation in the family of lawyers. He studied law at the Ugo Foscolo Classical Lyceum in Pavia and University of Pavia. In his youth, he played basketball in the Italy's First Division. Rona is a practicing lawyer. He was a board member of the Italian Board of Lawyers for twenty years, and administered the National Lawyers' Pension Fund. Rona played bridge at international level. His career in bridge administration began in 1979, when he was elected a board member of FIGB, Italian Bridge Federation. He was the president of FIGB between 1986 and 2009. He was the non-playing captain of the Italian open team between 1984 and 1985. Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. World Bridge Federation
The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is the international governing body of contract bridge. The WBF is responsible for world championship competitions, most of which are conducted at a few multi-event meets on a four-year cycle. The most prestigious championships are those for national teams in Open, Women, and Seniors categories: the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup, and Senior Bowl (jointly the biennial "World Teams Championships"), and the quadrennial World Team Olympiads, incorporated in the World Mind Sports Games beginning 2008. The World Bridge Federation was founded August 1958 by delegates from Europe, North America, and South America (now Zones 1 to 3). It is incorporated under the laws of Switzerland as a 'non-profit' organization. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt was made the first honorary member of the WBF for his work developing the game. World Bridge Olympiad
The World Team Olympiad was a contract bridge meet organized by the World Bridge Federation every four years from 1960 to 2004. Its main events were world championships for national teams, always including one open and one restricted to women ("Open" and "Women" ''categories'' in WBF terms).
