Giacinto "Cinto" Sertorelli (1 January 1914 – 26 January 1938) was an Italian alpine skier who competed in the 1936 Winter Olympics. Biography Born in Bormio, Lombardy, in 1936 he finished seventh in the alpine skiing combined event. He died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen during a race, when he fell and crashed into a tree. His brother Stefano Stefano is the Italian form of the masculine given name Στέφανος (Stefanos, Stephen). Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Whether for recreation or for sport, it is typically practiced at ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. Stefano Sertorelli (24 December 1911 – 17 December 1994) was an Italian soldier and skier. Biography Sertorello, son of Cantoniere Costante Sertorelli (d. 1922) and his wife Maria (1880–1956) was born in Bormio, Lombardy. The family was a real skiing family, for example his brother Erminio (1901–1979) was a successful cross-country skier, and his brother Giacinto (1914–1938), who died in an accident during a downhill race in 1938, was a successful alpine skier. Stefano Sertorelli by himself served at the mountain warfare school of the Italian Army called ''Scuola Militare di Alpinismo'' (today: Centro Addestramento Alpino), which was founded in 1934. Erminio Sertorelli (6 April 1901 – 13 November 1979) was an Italian cross-country skier. Biography Sertorelli, born in Bormio, was the first of eleven children of Costante Sertorelli (d. 1922) and his wife Maria (1880–1956). His brother Giacinto was an Olympic alpine skier and his brother Stefano was a member of the national Olympic military patrol winner team of 1936. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is an alpine skiing competition organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). History The inaugural world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. During the 1930s, the event was held annually in Europe, until interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, preventing a 1940 event. An event was held in 1941, but included competitors only from nations from the Axis powers or nations not at war with them.
